Oracle Helidon, Improper Access Control, CVE-2026-73939 (High) -DC-Aug2026-1795

Listen to this Post

CVE-2026-73939 is a high-severity vulnerability affecting the Helidon product of Oracle Fusion Middleware, specifically within its Imperative Web Server component. The vulnerability is rooted in an Improper Access Control weakness (CWE-284), which allows an attacker to bypass authorization mechanisms and manipulate critical data. The affected version is Helidon 3.2.20.
The core of the issue lies in how the Imperative Web Server handles HTTP requests. Due to a flaw in its access control logic, the server fails to properly validate the permissions of incoming requests. This allows an unauthenticated attacker with network access to send specially crafted HTTP requests to a vulnerable Helidon server. The vulnerability is easily exploitable, requiring low attack complexity and no user interaction.
Successful exploitation of this vulnerability can lead to severe consequences. An attacker can gain the ability to create, delete, or modify critical data that is accessible to the Helidon application. This includes, but is not limited to, application configuration, user data, and business-critical information. The impact of this vulnerability extends beyond a single Helidon instance. The CVSS vector indicates a “Scope: Changed” (S:C), meaning an attack on Helidon can have significant consequences for additional products or systems that rely on it. This “scope change” reflects the potential for a breach to cascade and affect a wider ecosystem, making the vulnerability particularly dangerous.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: Oracle Helidon
Version: 3.2.20
Vulnerability: Improper Access Control
Severity: High (8.6)
Date: August 18, 2026

Prediction: Patch available (Aug 2026)

What Undercode Say:

Check Helidon version
java -jar helidon-cli.jar --version
Verify patch status (example)
curl -s https://github.com/advisories/GHSA-744q-589q-prch | grep "Patched"
Monitor logs for unauthorized access attempts (example)
tail -f /path/to/helidon/logs/access.log | grep -i "unauthorized|403|401"
Check for vulnerable endpoints (example)
nmap -p 8080 --script http-enum <target-ip>

Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)

Educational Python PoC (conceptual, not functional)
import requests
Target Helidon server
url = "http://<target-ip>:8080/api/critical-data"
Craft malicious request to manipulate data
headers = {"X-Original-URL": "/admin"}
payload = {"key": "malicious_value"}
Attempt to exploit access control bypass
try:
response = requests.post(url, headers=headers, json=payload)
if response.status_code == 200:
print("[!] Potential vulnerability exploited!")
except Exception as e:
print(f"[-] Exploit failed: {e}")

Protection:

Apply Patches: Apply the available patch from the GitHub Advisory (GHSA-744q-589q-prch) immediately.
Network Controls: Implement strict network access controls to restrict HTTP connections to Helidon from only trusted sources.
Monitor Logs: Actively monitor Helidon logs for any signs of unauthorized data creation, deletion, or modification attempts.
Deploy WAF: Consider deploying a Web Application Firewall (WAF) as a temporary mitigation measure while patching is being coordinated across all affected systems.

Impact:

Unauthenticated attackers can remotely create, delete, or modify critical data. The vulnerability can also impact additional products due to scope change.
