This vulnerability exists within the Openfire administration console, specifically stemming from improper handling of URI paths by the setup mechanisms.
Authentication bypass allows unauthenticated remote attackers to access restricted pages designed exclusively for administrative users.
The flaw resides in how the web application processes HTTP requests containing specific parameters or path normalization sequences.
By exploiting inadequate input validation and weak access control checks, an attacker can directly invoke management classes.
This enables the creation of a new administrative user account via crafted HTTP requests without requiring prior credentials.
Once the rogue administrator account is established, attackers can leverage built-in plugin features to upload malicious files.
These files often include Java archives or JSP webshells capable of executing arbitrary system commands with elevated privileges.
The vulnerability affects multiple enterprise deployments running vulnerable versions of the collaboration software worldwide.
Because the administrative interface is frequently exposed to the internet or corporate intranets, the attack surface is substantial.
Network defenders must monitor for anomalous administrative account creations and unauthorized session tokens within web logs.
The integration with CISA KEV feeds helps security teams track active exploitation campaigns targeting this specific flaw.
Automated scanners and threat intelligence platforms flag this vector due to widespread automated exploitation by malicious actors.
Remediation requires applying official patches or restricting access to the admin console using firewall rules.
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: Ignite Realtime Openfire
Version: Below version 4.7.4
Vulnerability: Path Traversal Flaw
Severity: Critical severity risk
date: June 12 2023
Prediction: Patched June 2023
What Undercode Say:
Analytics of the exploitation vectors reveal a heavy reliance on automated script execution targeting exposed administration ports. Threat actors utilize custom Python scripts to verify endpoint vulnerability before injecting administrative credentials.
Check vulnerable Openfire version via HTTP headers
curl -I https://target-server:9090/setup/index.jsp
Test path traversal access control bypass
curl -s -o /dev/null -w "%{http_code}" https://target-server:9090/setup/setup-admin-user.jsp
how Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)
Attackers initiate the attack sequence by sending a crafted HTTP GET request directly to the unauthenticated setup endpoints. The request bypasses standard intercepting filters by utilizing specialized path parameters. Upon successful bypass response, the script submits a POST request containing administrator registration details. After gaining administrative session privileges, the attacker navigates to the plugin upload interface. A malicious JSP file disguised as a plugin archive is uploaded to the server. The web server extracts the archive, writing the executable payload to the web root directory. Finally, the attacker issues an HTTP request to the newly uploaded script to trigger remote code execution.
Protection: from this CVE
Immediate mitigation involves upgrading Openfire installations to version 4.7.4 or later where the access control flaw is resolved. Administrators must restrict network access to the Openfire administration console using IP whitelisting or internal firewalls. Regularly audit user accounts within the administration console to detect unauthorized or newly created administrator profiles. Implement Web Application Firewall rules to block suspicious HTTP requests targeting the setup directory.
Impact:
Successful exploitation grants complete administrative control over the affected Openfire server instance. Attackers can execute arbitrary system commands, harvest sensitive configuration data, and pivot deeper into the internal network. The compromise frequently leads to persistent backdoor deployment, data exfiltration, and potential ransomware distribution across enterprise environments.
