How the CVE Works
The vulnerability in OpenBao’s MFA system stems from improper normalization of TOTP tokens. The underlying library accepts whitespace characters within TOTP codes, which bypasses rate-limiting checks. Attackers can reuse valid tokens by injecting whitespace, allowing repeated authentication attempts without triggering security throttling. This flaw enables brute-force attacks against MFA-protected accounts despite rate-limiting defenses.
