Open WebUI, Unauthenticated WebSocket Access, CVE-2026-59715 (Low) Just Updated -DC-Oct2026-3499

Listen to this Post

CVE-2026-59715 represents a security vulnerability discovered within the Open WebUI platform, specifically concerning unauthenticated WebSocket access to collaborative document handlers.
Open WebUI incorporates collaborative document handling features via ydoc endpoints such as ydoc:awareness:update and ydoc:document:leave to enable real-time multi-user synchronization.
These collaborative document handlers were originally exposed without enforcing adequate authentication checks on incoming WebSocket handshake requests or connection frames.
As a result, unauthenticated remote attackers can establish direct WebSocket connections to the collaboration server endpoint without providing a valid session token or API key.
Once connected, unauthorized clients can interact with active document sessions, manipulate awareness states, or trigger document lifecycle events like leaving or updating handlers.
The root cause stems from missing middleware validation or inadequate route-level authorization guards protecting the WebSocket upgrade path in the application server logic.
Because WebSocket connections typically bypass standard HTTP middleware stacks if not explicitly configured, the authorization boundaries failed to intercept the initial handshake.
This architectural oversight allows external entities to observe or inject collaborative data streams, potentially leaking sensitive document metadata or operational states.
Although rated with a low severity score due to limited direct data exfiltration capabilities via these specific handlers, it violates core access control principles.
Attackers leverage this flaw to map out active collaborative spaces, monitor user presence through awareness updates, or disrupt ongoing multi-user sessions maliciously.
Remediation requires enforcing rigorous authentication verification prior to upgrading HTTP connections to WebSockets, ensuring only verified session owners access document handlers.
Developers must integrate token verification directly into the WebSocket connection handler or apply strict gateway-level validation rules across all routing paths.
The vulnerability underscores the necessity of treating WebSocket endpoints with the same rigorous access controls applied to standard REST API endpoints.
Without proper validation, edge routers and proxy configurations may inadvertently forward unauthenticated requests straight to underlying handler logic.
Security researchers auditing similar real-time agentic frameworks and LLM interfaces must examine upgrade request headers and subprotocol negotiations carefully.
Real-world remediation involves validating session cookies or bearer tokens during the initial connection handshake phase before allocating server resources.
Failure to implement these controls leaves collaborative multi-user environments susceptible to reconnaissance and unauthorized state injection attacks.

What Undercode Say

Test WebSocket endpoint reachability without authentication headers
wscat -c ws://target-instance.local/ws/ydoc
Python verification script snippet for connection handshake testing
python3 -c "
import asyncio
import websockets
async def test_socket():
uri = 'ws://target-instance.local/ws/ydoc'
async with websockets.connect(uri) as websocket:
await websocket.send('ydoc:awareness:update')
response = await websocket.recv()
print(response)
asyncio.run(test_socket())
"

Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)

The exploit vector targets the lack of authentication validation during the initial WebSocket protocol upgrade handshake. An attacker script bypasses standard login portals by connecting directly to the exposed collaborative document socket listener. By crafting custom `ydoc:awareness:update` payloads, the remote client injects fake cursor positions or presence indicators, causing user confusion or potential state synchronization faults in collaborative sessions.

Protection: from this CVE

Administrators and developers must immediately update Open WebUI to the latest patched version where route-level authentication guards are enforced on all WebSocket upgrade handlers. Implement strict token validation within the connection initiation hook, ensuring that requests lacking a verified authentication cookie or header are terminated immediately prior to socket allocation. Furthermore, configure reverse proxies and API gateways to inspect and block unauthorized upgrade requests.

Impact:

Successful exploitation allows unauthorized external entities to connect directly to internal collaborative document handlers. While direct data exfiltration is restricted by the specific nature of `ydoc:awareness:update` and `ydoc:document:leave` channels, attackers can perform network reconnaissance, monitor real-time user presence, and disrupt active multi-user collaboration sessions without authorization.
