How the mentioned CVE works:
The vulnerability exists because OMERO.web utilizes the jquery-form library for handling AJAX form submissions and processing server responses. The affected version of the jquery-form library does not sufficiently sanitize user-controllable data embedded within the server’s response before it is processed and injected into the Document Object Model (DOM). Specifically, when the library’s `.ajaxForm` or `.ajaxSubmit` functions receive a response containing HTML, it can potentially be interpreted as executable script by the browser. An attacker could exploit this by tricking an authenticated user into submitting a specially crafted form or by manipulating a server response to include a malicious script payload. When this malicious response is processed by the vulnerable jquery-form code, the script executes in the context of the victim’s session, leading to a Cross-Site Scripting attack.
Platform: OMERO.web
Version: <=5.29.2
Vulnerability : DOM XSS
Severity: Low
date: 2025-11-24
Prediction: Patch 2025-11-30
What Undercode Say:
Searching for the vulnerable library in the project
find . -name "package.json" -o -name ".js" | xargs grep -l "jquery-form"
Example of a potentially vulnerable form initialization
$('myForm').ajaxForm({
target: 'resultDiv', // InnerHTML is updated
success: function(response) {
// Response is processed unsafely
}
});

How Exploit:
Attacker crafts a malicious form or manipulates a response to include a script tag. When the victim’s browser processes this response via the vulnerable `jquery-form` function, the script executes, allowing session hijacking or actions on behalf of the user.
Protection from this CVE:
Upgrade OMERO.web to version 5.29.3 or higher, which includes a patched version of the jquery-form library. Implement a Content Security Policy (CSP) to mitigate the impact of potential XSS flaws. Sanitize all dynamic content before DOM insertion.
Impact:
Stealing user sessions, performing actions as the authenticated user, defacing the web application, and potential data exfiltration from the user’s OMERO.web interface.
