How the CVE works:
node-forge’s ASN.1 parser in versions 1.3.1 and below lacks recursion depth limits when processing DER-encoded data. Attackers remotely craft malicious DER inputs with deeply nested ASN.1 structures, such as sequences within sequences. During parsing, recursive function calls traverse each nested element without bound. Each recursion adds a new frame to the call stack, consuming memory. JavaScript engines have finite stack sizes; excessive recursion exhausts stack memory, leading to stack overflow. This triggers a RangeError or process crash, causing Denial-of-Service. The vulnerability is exploitable without authentication via untrusted DER inputs, like in TLS certificate parsing. Fixed in version 1.3.2 by implementing depth checks in asn1.fromDer functions.
