MongoDB, Zlib Heap Memory Read Vulnerability, CVE-2024-11004 (Critical)

Listen to this Post

The vulnerability resides in the handling of compressed protocol messages. When a client sends a Zlib-compressed message, it includes a header with a field specifying the uncompressed data length. By sending a malicious packet where this declared length is larger than the actual uncompressed data, the server’s decompression routine can be tricked. During decompression, the server allocates a buffer based on the declared length. As it fills this buffer with the actual decompressed data, the remaining portion of the buffer (from the end of the real data to the declared length) is left uninitialized. When the server then processes the full buffer, it reads and transmits this uninitialized heap memory back to the client. This allows an unauthenticated attacker to potentially leak sensitive information from the server’s memory, such as session tokens or database contents, without causing a crash.
Platform: MongoDB Server
Version: 3.6 to 8.2
Vulnerability: Heap Memory Read
Severity: Critical
date: 2024-10-17

Prediction: Patch expected 2024-10-31

What Undercode Say:

nmap -p 27017 --script mongodb-info <target>
curl -s https://vulners.com/api/v3/search/ -d 'query="CVE-2024-11004"'
grep -r "zlib.uncompress" /path/to/mongodb/src/
cat > poc.py << 'EOF'
import socket, zlib, struct
Craft malicious compressed packet
... (code to set length field > actual data)
EOF

How Exploit:

Client sends malformed compressed OP_MSG
with inflated uncompressed length field.
Server replies with leaked heap memory chunks.
Attacker parses response for secrets.

Protection from this CVE

  • Immediate upgrade to patched versions:

`sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install mongodb-org`

  • Implement network segmentation and firewalls.
  • Use TLS encryption for all client-server traffic.
  • Apply principle of least privilege for database accounts.

Impact:

Unauthenticated information disclosure leading to potential full system compromise via leaked credentials or keys. Affects default configurations.
