How CVE-2019-1068 Works
CVE-2019-1068 is a remote code execution vulnerability residing in the Microsoft SQL Server Database Engine. The flaw stems from improper input validation when the server processes certain internal functions. An authenticated attacker can exploit this by sending a specially crafted query to the SQL Server instance.
The vulnerability is triggered during the handling of internal functions where the server fails to correctly validate or sanitize input. This leads to a memory corruption condition—specifically a buffer overflow or untrusted pointer dereference—that an attacker can leverage to execute arbitrary code. The code executes with the privileges of the SQL Server Database Engine service account, which often runs with high-level system permissions.
Successful exploitation requires the attacker to have authenticated access to the SQL Server instance. However, this authentication requirement does not significantly reduce the risk, as the vulnerability can be chained with other attack vectors such as SQL injection to gain initial access and then escalate privileges. Once exploited, the attacker can execute operating system commands, install malware, or pivot to other systems within the network.
The vulnerability affects multiple versions of Microsoft SQL Server, including SQL Server 2014 Service Pack 2 and 3, SQL Server 2016 Service Pack 1 and 2, and SQL Server 2017. Microsoft addressed this issue in the July 2019 Patch Tuesday security updates. The CVSS v3.1 base score is 8.8 (High), reflecting the potential for complete compromise of the affected system.
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: Microsoft SQL Server

What Undercode Say:
Analytics:
- Attack Vector: Network
- Privileges Required: Low (Authenticated)
- User Interaction: None
- Scope: Unchanged
- Confidentiality Impact: High
- Integrity Impact: High
- Availability Impact: High
Bash Commands & Codes (Educational Purposes):
Check if SQL Server is vulnerable to CVE-2019-1068 Verify SQL Server version SELECT @@VERSION; Example of a crafted query (conceptual - not functional exploit) DECLARE @payload NVARCHAR(MAX) = '...'; EXEC sp_executesql @payload;
Exploit (Educational Purposes!):
The exploitation involves sending a specially crafted T-SQL query that triggers the improper input validation in the internal functions. A Proof of Concept (PoC) may be available, but it must be used responsibly and only in authorized environments.
Protection from this CVE:
- Apply the security update provided by Microsoft (KB4505219, KB4505220, etc.).
- Restrict SQL Server authentication to trusted users only.
- Employ network segmentation and firewall rules to limit exposure.
- Monitor SQL Server logs for unusual query patterns.
- Use the Microsoft Security Response Center advisory for specific patch deployment guidance.
Impact:
- Confidentiality: An attacker can read sensitive data from the SQL Server databases.
- Integrity: The attacker can modify or delete data within the databases.
- Availability: The attacker can cause a denial-of-service condition or crash the SQL Server service.
- System Compromise: The attacker can execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the SQL Server service account, potentially leading to full system compromise and lateral movement within the network.
