The CVE-2025-XXXX vulnerability in Mattermost is a path traversal flaw within the plugin import functionality. The system fails to properly sanitize the directory path configuration specified for plugin imports. This allows an authenticated user with administrator privileges to manipulate the target directory path using sequences like ‘../’. By crafting a malicious plugin upload request, the admin can break out of the intended prepackaged plugins directory and write the plugin’s contents to any arbitrary location on the server filesystem. If the attacker writes a malicious plugin to a directory that is subsequently executed by the system, it can lead to arbitrary code execution on the underlying host, compromising the server.
