Mattermost Desktop App, Code Injection Vulnerability, CVE-2025-XXXX (Low Severity)

Listen to this Post

How the Mentioned CVE Works:

The vulnerability in Mattermost Desktop App (versions <=5.10.0) arises due to unnecessary macOS enments explicitly declared in the application. These enments allow an attacker with remote access to exploit code injection techniques, bypassing macOS’s Transparency, Consent, and Control (TCC) framework. TCC is designed to restrict access to sensitive data and system resources, but the improper enments enable malicious actors to inject code and gain unauthorized access to protected resources. This could lead to unauthorized data access or system compromise, though the severity is rated as low due to the requirement of remote access and specific conditions for exploitation.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: Mattermost Desktop App
Version: <=5.10.0
Vulnerability: Code Injection
Severity: Low
Date: Mar 17, 2025

What Undercode Say:

Exploitation:

  1. Code Injection: Attackers can inject malicious code into the app process due to improper enments.
  2. TCC Bypass: Exploit the declared enments to access restricted macOS resources.
  3. Remote Access: Requires initial remote access to the target system.

Protection:

  1. Update: Upgrade to Mattermost Desktop App version >5.10.0.
  2. Enment Review: Audit and remove unnecessary macOS enments.
  3. Sandboxing: Strengthen app sandboxing to limit resource access.

Commands:

1. Check installed version:

defaults read /Applications/Mattermost.app/Contents/Info.plist CFBundleShortVersionString

2. Remove unnecessary enments:

codesign --remove-signature /Applications/Mattermost.app

3. Verify enments:

codesign -d --enments :- /Applications/Mattermost.app

Code Snippets:

1. Enment Check Script:

import plistlib
with open('/Applications/Mattermost.app/Contents/Enments.plist', 'rb') as f:
enments = plistlib.load(f)
print(enments)

2. Sandbox Profile:

<key>com.apple.security.app-sandbox</key>
<true/>
<key>com.apple.security.files.user-selected.read-only</key>
<true/>

Analytics:

  1. Affected Systems: macOS users running Mattermost Desktop App <=5.10.0.
  2. Exploit Complexity: Medium (requires remote access and code injection).
  3. Mitigation Adoption: High (patch available and easy to apply).
