How the CVE Works
This vulnerability occurs in MaterialX’s MTLX XML parsing logic when processing deeply nested `nodegraph` elements. The parser uses recursion to handle nested structures but lacks a recursion depth limit. When parsing a maliciously crafted MTLX file with excessive nesting, the recursive calls exhaust the stack, leading to a crash (stack overflow). Attackers can exploit this by supplying a specially designed MTLX file, causing denial of service in applications using MaterialX.
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: MaterialX
Version: Pre-1.38.8
Vulnerability: Stack Overflow
Severity: Moderate
Date: Jul 31, 2025
Prediction: Patch by Aug 15, 2025
What Undercode Say
Check recursion depth in XML parsing grep -r "parseNodeGraph" MaterialX/src/ Debug stack overflow ulimit -s unlimited ./MaterialXView --material exploit.mtlx Mitigation test export MATERIALX_MAX_XML_DEPTH=1000
How Exploit
- Craft MTLX file with 10,000+ nested `nodegraph` tags.
- Trigger parsing via `MaterialXView` or embedded library.
- Observe stack exhaustion crash.
Protection from this CVE
- Update to MaterialX 1.38.8+.
- Implement XML depth validation.
- Use iterative parsing instead of recursion.
Impact
- Denial of Service (DoS).
- Potential RCE if stack corruption occurs.
