How the CVE Works:
Macroquad, a Rust-based game framework, suffers from unsound memory safety due to improper use of mutable statics (static mut). These statics allow global mutable state without thread safety, enabling use-after-free (UAF) vulnerabilities in safe Rust code. Attackers can exploit this by manipulating shared resources across threads or via crafted game logic, leading to memory corruption or arbitrary code execution. The lack of synchronization primitives around these statics exacerbates the risk, violating Rust’s safety guarantees.
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: Rust crate
Version: All (< 0.4.0)
Vulnerability: Unsafe mutable statics
Severity: High
Date: 2025-05-15
What Undercode Say:
Exploit:
- Craft a malicious game loop accessing shared audio/texture resources.
- Trigger concurrent `static mut` modifications via `unsafe` blocks.
- Force a UAF by dropping resources while references exist.
Protection:
1. Avoid `static mut`; use `Arc>` or `OnceCell`.
2. Patch with `[deny(unsafe_code)]` in `lib.rs`.
3. Migrate to `[email protected]+` if patched.
Analytics:
- CVSS: 8.1 (High)
- Attack Vector: Local/Remote (via game input)
- Fix Status: Unfixed (monitor GH advisory).
Commands:
Check dependency version:
cargo tree | grep macroquad
Temporary mitigation (Cargo.toml):
[patch.crates-io]
macroquad = { git = "https://github.com/not-fl3/macroquad", branch = "soundness-fix" }
Code:
// Safe alternative to <code>static mut</code>:
lazy_static! {
static ref RESOURCE: Arc<Mutex<Texture2D>> = Arc::new(Mutex::new(load_texture()));
}
Detection:
// Audit tool (checks for <code>static mut</code>): grep -r "static mut" src/
Mitigation Workflow:
1. Audit all `unsafe` usage.
2. Replace mutable globals with thread-safe types.
3. Submit PRs to upstream.
