The vulnerability CVE-2025-43497 is a sandbox escape flaw within the BackBoardServices framework in macOS. The macOS App Sandbox is a critical security mechanism that enforces strict rules on what an application can access, confining it to a restricted environment. This specific vulnerability stemmed from an access control issue within that implementation. A malicious or compromised application could exploit this flaw to bypass its designated sandbox restrictions. Successful exploitation would allow the app to break out of its confined environment. Once outside the sandbox, the app could perform unauthorized actions, such as accessing sensitive user data or protected parts of the file system that were previously off-limits. It could also potentially interfere with other system processes. The core of the issue was insufficient validation or checks on certain operations that the BackBoardServices component allowed. Apple addressed the vulnerability by implementing additional sandbox restrictions, effectively tightening the security rules to close the loophole that permitted the escape. The fix was distributed in the macOS Tahoe 26.1 update.
dailycve form:
Platform: macOS
Version: pre-26.1
Vulnerability : Sandbox Escape
Severity: Medium
date: 2025-12-12
Prediction: 2025-11-03 (Patched)
What Undercode Say:
Check current macOS version system_profiler SPSoftwareDataType | grep "System Version" List running processes and their sandbox status (requires Xcode tools) sandbox-exec -n dummy /usr/bin/true codesign -dv --enments - /path/to/Application.app 2>/dev/null | grep -A 100 "Enments" Monitor for suspicious file access outside container (general diagnostic) sudo fs_usage | grep -v "AppleSystemLogger"
How Exploit:
An attacker would first need to compromise a sandboxed application. The exploit would then abuse the flawed access controls in BackBoardServices to make unauthorized system calls or access resources. By crafting specific requests, the attacker could trick the system into granting permissions that violate the app’s sandbox policy, leading to escape.
Protection from this CVE:
Update to macOS Tahoe 26.1 or later. Enforce application whitelisting and install software only from trusted sources. Keep System Integrity Protection (SIP) enabled. Regularly audit and monitor system logs for anomalous behavior.
Impact:
A successful sandbox escape compromises system integrity and confidentiality. An attacker can access, modify, or delete sensitive user data. It enables further malicious actions like privilege escalation or deploying additional payloads.
