LogStare Collector, Insecure File Permissions, CVE-2025-58097 (Medium)

Listen to this Post

How the CVE Works:

The vulnerability exists because the LogStare Collector software installs its binaries and supporting files into a directory with overly permissive access control lists (ACLs). By default, this directory grants write permissions to non-administrative users. A local, low-privileged attacker can exploit this by replacing a legitimate executable or DLL within the installation path with a malicious file. When the LogStare Collector service, which runs with SYSTEM or administrative privileges, next executes or loads the tampered file, the attacker’s code is executed in the context of the high-privileged service. This constitutes a local privilege escalation (LPE) attack, allowing an attacker to move from a standard user account to full system control by abusing the trusted installation directory.

What Undercode Say:

Analytics:

Check permissions on the installation directory
icacls "C:\Program Files\LogStare"
Find executables and DLLs with weak inheritance
Get-ChildItem -Path "C:\Program Files\LogStare" -Recurse -Include .exe,.dll | Get-Acl
List running services and their binaries
sc queryex type= service state= all | findstr "SERVICE_NAME"

How Exploit:

1. Identify target binary.

2. Craft malicious payload.

3. Replace legitimate file.

4. Trigger service action/restart.

Protection from this CVE:

1. Restrict directory ACLs.

2. Apply principle of least privilege.

3. Use signed binary verification.

4. Monitor file integrity changes.

Impact:

Local Privilege Escalation

Full System Compromise

Persistence Establishment
