CVE-2024-3094 is an extremely sophisticated supply-chain vulnerability and malicious backdoor injected directly into the upstream release tarballs of the XZ Utils data compression library. The attacker methodically compromised the release build process, targeting the `liblzma` build scripts within versions 5.6.0 and 5.6.1. Unlike standard source code repositories hosted on Git where the malicious code was absent, the distributed release tarballs contained obfuscated M4 build macros. During the configure and build phase, these malicious scripts extracted a prebuilt binary object file embedded inside test files. This hidden binary modified the compilation behavior of the liblzma library during runtime linking. When an application linked against the backdoored liblzma library—most notably OpenSSH via systemd library dependencies—the malicious code was loaded directly into process memory. It hooked into the runtime function resolution table via PLT redirection to intercept cryptographic and authentication routines. Specifically, it allowed an unauthenticated remote attacker to bypass public key checks in sshd and execute arbitrary commands with root privileges. The backdoor utilized subtle timing checks, environment variable inspections, and indirect function calls to remain completely hidden during standard debugging, profiling, and static code analysis. It represents one of the most advanced and carefully orchestrated supply chain compromises in open-source software history, directly threatening global Linux infrastructure and enterprise servers worldwide.

Protection: from this CVE
Downgrade XZ Utils immediately to a safe, uncompromised version such as 5.4.x or apply official vendor security patches.
Audit all Linux server deployments, cloud instances, and container images to identify package versions 5.6.0 or 5.6.1.
Restrict direct network exposure of SSH services and enforce strict multi-factor authentication (MFA) mechanisms.
Monitor build pipelines and verify artifact integrity using cryptographic checksums and official GPG signature verification tools.
Impact:
Complete compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability yielding a maximum CVSS score of 10.0 Critical.
Unauthenticated remote code execution capabilities targeting enterprise servers, cloud instances, and core edge infrastructure.
Severe operational disruption and erosion of global trust in open-source software maintenance and dependency management.
