How the CVE Works
This vulnerability is a use-after-free flaw in the Linux kernel’s ChipIdea USB driver (udc). During a system suspend operation while active USB data transfer is occurring (e.g., SCP file copy over USB Ethernet), the driver fails to properly manage the connection state. The USB device controller is suspended and its clock is gated, but the USB host continues to send data. This causes the driver to attempt to access hardware resources (registers) that are no longer available, leading to a system hang. The core issue is the driver’s failure to forcibly disconnect from the host during suspend when the USB bus is still active, preventing the host from halting communications and creating a race condition that triggers the use-after-free on the hardware resources, crashing the system.
DailyCVE Form
Platform: Linux Kernel
Version: ChipIdea USB Driver
Vulnerability: Use-After-Free
Severity: Critical
Date: 2025-07-25
Prediction: Patch Expected 2025-08-01
What Undercode Say:
Check for active USB gadget configurations ls /sys/class/udc/ cat /sys/kernel/debug/usb/ci_hdrc/registers Monitor system suspend/resume events dmesg | grep -i "suspend" journalctl --since="1 hour ago" | grep -i "chipidea" Kernel configuration check zgrep CHIPIDEA /proc/config.gz zgrep USB_ETH /proc/config.gz
How Exploit:
A local attacker with ability to initiate a system suspend (e.g., through mem sleep state) while sustained USB data transfer is active can trigger a kernel panic and cause a permanent denial-of-service condition, requiring physical hard reset.
