How the mentioned vulnerability works:
The vulnerability exists in the `SecurityIO` class where the `encryptWithAES256` method deterministically derives the AES Initialization Vector (IV) from the provided passphrase. This derivation occurs via a hashing process using a fixed number of iterations. Consequently, using the same passphrase to encrypt the same plaintext data will always produce the exact same ciphertext output due to IV reuse. This breaks a fundamental requirement of symmetric encryption, where the IV must be unique and unpredictable for each encryption operation to ensure semantic security. The lack of a random IV enables cryptographic attacks, as patterns in the encrypted data become apparent, significantly reducing the security of the encryption scheme and potentially leaking information about the plaintext.
dailycve form:
Platform: Jervis
Version: < 2.2
Vulnerability: IV Reuse
Severity: High
Date: 2026-01-13
Prediction: Patch Available
What Undercode Say:
Bash Commands:
git clone https://github.com/samrocketman/jervis cd jervis grep -n "encryptWithAES256" src/main/groovy/net/gleske/jervis/tools/SecurityIO.groovy
Related Code (Vulnerable Logic):
// Deterministic IV derivation from passphrase (simplified representation)
byte[] iv = MessageDigest.getInstance("SHA-256").digest(passphrase.getBytes("UTF-8"))
Cipher cipher = Cipher.getInstance("AES/CBC/PKCS5Padding")
cipher.init(Cipher.ENCRYPT_MODE, secretKey, new IvParameterSpec(iv))
How Exploit:
An attacker can perform ciphertext analysis by observing encrypted data. If the same passphrase is used multiple times, identical plaintext blocks will encrypt to identical ciphertext blocks. This allows the attacker to identify patterns, deduce repeated data structures, and potentially leverage known-plaintext attacks to recover sensitive information without needing the passphrase.
Protection from this CVE:
Upgrade to Jervis 2.2 immediately. The patch modifies the encryption process to generate a cryptographically secure random IV for each encryption operation. This random IV is then prepended to the final ciphertext, ensuring uniqueness and breaking the deterministic relationship between passphrase and ciphertext.
Impact:
Significant reduction in encryption security. Enables pattern analysis on ciphertext. Potential exposure of sensitive data patterns.
