The Jenkins HashiCorp Vault Plugin retrieves credentials from HashiCorp Vault to supply secrets for Jenkins jobs. The vulnerability exists in the plugin’s internal credential lookup mechanism. When accessing Vault, the plugin must set a security context that restricts credentials to the specific job or user making the request. In affected versions (<=371.v884a_4dd60fb_6), this context is incorrectly configured or omitted during certain operations. This flaw allows an attacker who has been granted the ‘Item/Configure’ permission on a Jenkins job to manipulate the plugin’s configuration. By doing so, they can cause the plugin to perform a Vault credentials lookup without the proper contextual bounds. Consequently, the lookup defaults to a system-wide scope, returning high-privilege Vault credentials that are applicable to the entire Jenkins instance, not just the attacker’s permitted job. These exposed credentials can then be captured and misused to access other sensitive secrets within the connected Vault, escalating privilege beyond intended boundaries.
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: Jenkins Vault Plugin
Version: <= 371.v884a_4dd60fb_6
Vulnerability: Credential context misconfiguration
Severity: Moderate
date: 2025-12-10
Prediction: Patch expected 2025-12-27
What Undercode Say:
!/bin/bash
Check plugin version
find /var/lib/jenkins/plugins -name “hashicorp-vault.jpi” -exec basename {} \;
Review job configurations for Vault usage
grep -r “credentialsId.vault” /var/lib/jenkins/jobs/
How Exploit:
1. Acquire Item/Configure permission.
2. Access a configurable job/item.
3. Modify Vault plugin settings.
4. Trigger credential binding.
5. Capture exposed system token.
