How CVE-2025-7234 Works
The vulnerability exists in the CADImage plugin of IrfanView when processing Computer Graphics Metafile (CGM) files. During parsing, the plugin fails to properly validate the size of data chunks before writing them to fixed-size buffers. This allows an attacker to craft a malicious CGM file with specially crafted header values that trigger an out-of-bounds write operation. By carefully controlling the overwritten memory regions, an attacker can corrupt function pointers or exception handlers, ultimately gaining control of the instruction pointer. When successfully exploited, this leads to arbitrary code execution within the context of the IrfanView process.
