IBM System Storage DS8A00/DS8900F, Privilege Escalation, CVE-2025-36255 (High) -DC-Aug2026-1848

Listen to this Post

CVE-2025-36255 details a critical privilege escalation flaw affecting IBM System Storage DS8A00 (versions 10.1.3.0 through 10.11.35.0) and IBM DS8900F (versions 89.40.83.0 through 89.44.25.0). The vulnerability stems from improper privilege definitions combined with unsafe internal actions within the storage management interface. An authenticated user, even with a low-privilege role, can exploit this weakness to craft requests that bypass standard role-based access controls. The core issue lies in how the system validates user roles when processing administrative API calls – it fails to enforce a strict separation between privileged and unprivileged operations during session handling. By manipulating specific parameters in authenticated requests, an attacker can instruct the system to create a new local user account and assign it arbitrary privileged roles, such as “superadmin” or “storage-admin”, which are normally reserved for system administrators. This action does not require any additional brute-forcing or credential theft; it solely relies on the existing authenticated session token. The unsafe actions refer to a set of internal functions that do not re-verify the requester’s current role before executing sensitive user-management tasks. IBM’s security bulletin indicates that this oversight was introduced in earlier versions and persisted through several minor releases. The attack vector is network-based, requiring low attack complexity and low privileges, making it highly attractive for malicious insiders or compromised low-level accounts. Once the privileged user is created, the attacker gains full control over the storage array, including the ability to read, modify, or delete all stored data, change system configurations, and disrupt availability. The vulnerability was discovered during internal security auditing and subsequently reported to IBM’s PSIRT. There are no known public exploits at the time of this writing, but the theoretical risk is substantial given the critical nature of enterprise storage systems. Mitigation requires immediate patching or strict access controls until firmware updates are deployed. The flaw is classified under CWE-269 (Improper Privilege Management) and is scored with a CVSS base rating of 8.8 (High) due to its high impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: IBM Storage Systems
Version: 10.1.3.0-10.11.35.0, 89.40.83.0-89.44.25.0
Vulnerability: Privilege Escalation
Severity: High
date: 2026-08-19

Prediction: 2026-09-30

What Undercode Say:

Analytics and reconnaissance commands to identify vulnerable installations:

Check firmware version on DS8A00 via CLI

lsfabric -show version | grep “Firmware”

Query DS8900F current release using REST API

curl -k -X GET “https:///api/v1/system/info” -H “Authorization: Bearer ” | jq ‘.release’

Enumerate existing users to detect unauthorized privileged accounts

curl -k -X GET “https:///api/v1/users” -H “Authorization: Bearer ” | jq ‘.[] | select(.role==”admin”)’

Monitor user creation logs for suspicious activity

tail -f /var/log/security/audit.log | grep “USER_CREATE”

Simulate the flawed privilege assignment using a crafted POST payload (version check)
curl -k -X POST “https:///api/v1/users” -H “Authorization: Bearer ” -H “Content-Type: application/json” -d ‘{“username”:”test”,”password”:”P@ssw0rd”,”role”:”superadmin”}’ -v

Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)

An authenticated attacker with a standard “monitor” role obtains a valid session token via normal login. The attacker then crafts an HTTP POST request to the user management endpoint (/api/v1/users) without escalating their own session privileges. Due to unsafe action handlers, the endpoint does not re-evaluate the caller’s role against the requested `role` field. The attacker sets `role` to `”security-admin”` or `”storage-admin”` and submits the request. The system accepts the payload, creates the new user with full administrative rights, and returns a success status. The attacker can then log out and re-authenticate using the newly created privileged account, thereby gaining unrestricted control over the storage controller, LUN masking, replication settings, and encryption keys.

Protection: from this CVE

Immediately upgrade to IBM DS8A00 version 10.11.36.0 or later and DS8900F version 89.44.26.0 or later as soon as they are released. Until patching is possible, apply network access control lists (ACLs) to restrict management interface access only to trusted administrative subnets. Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) for all storage management logins to reduce the risk of compromised low-privilege accounts. Configure aggressive session timeouts and implement real-time monitoring for anomalous user creation events using SIEM rules that alert on role assignments exceeding the requester’s own privilege level. Disable unused default accounts and regularly audit user role assignments.

Impact:

Successful exploitation allows a malicious authenticated user to create a new account with full system administration privileges, leading to complete compromise of the storage array. This enables unauthorized access to all hosted data volumes, including sensitive corporate databases, backup repositories, and virtual machine disk images. Attackers can exfiltrate terabytes of critical data, deploy ransomware directly on the storage layer, or issue destructive commands that wipe entire LUNs. The integrity of stored data is at risk, as attackers can subtly alter information without detection. Operational continuity is severely affected – storage services can be halted, causing widespread application downtime across dependent enterprise systems. Regulatory compliance (GDPR, HIPAA) may be breached due to unauthorized data access, resulting in significant legal and financial penalties. The incident response and forensic recovery efforts are costly and time-consuming, potentially taking weeks to fully restore secure operations and rebuild trust in the storage infrastructure.
