CVE-2026-16869 is a high-severity vulnerability affecting IBM AIX versions 7.2 and 7.3, as well as IBM PowerVM VIOS 4.1. The flaw resides in the way these operating systems handle environment variables during process execution. Specifically, the vulnerability stems from an Untrusted Search Path (CWE-426) issue, where environment variables are not properly scrubbed or sanitized before being used to locate shared libraries or executables.
Under normal operation, when a program attempts to load a shared library or execute a binary, the system searches a predefined set of directories (the search path) for the required file. This search path is often influenced by environment variables such as LD_LIBRARY_PATH, `LIBPATH` (on AIX), or PATH. In a secure implementation, these variables are either sanitized or ignored when executing privileged processes (e.g., setuid binaries) to prevent a local attacker from hijacking the library loading process.
However, in the case of CVE-2026-16869, IBM AIX and PowerVM VIOS fail to adequately scrub these environment variables before executing certain privileged operations. A local attacker with low privileges can manipulate these environment variables to point to attacker-controlled directories containing malicious shared libraries or executables. When a vulnerable privileged process is executed, it unknowingly loads the attacker’s malicious code instead of the legitimate system library.
This attack requires local access to the system, but it does not require high privileges—the attacker only needs the ability to run commands and write files to a directory they control. The attack complexity is low, meaning that no special conditions or sophisticated techniques are needed to exploit this flaw. No user interaction is required for successful exploitation.
Once exploited, the attacker’s code executes with the privileges of the vulnerable process—typically root or another high-privileged account. This can lead to a full system compromise, including the ability to read sensitive files, modify system configurations, install backdoors, and disrupt system availability. The vulnerability has been assigned a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.8 (High), with the vector CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H.
IBM has released fixes for this vulnerability. The following APARs have been assigned: IJ59566 for AIX 7.2.5 (SP13), IJ59565 for AIX 7.3.2 (SP05) and VIOS 4.1.0 (4.1.0.50), IJ59564 for AIX 7.3.3 (SP03) and VIOS 4.1.1 (4.1.1.30), and IJ59563 for AIX 7.3.4 (SP02) and VIOS 4.1.2 (4.1.2.20). These fixes are cumulative and available for download from IBM Fix Central.
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: IBM AIX / PowerVM VIOS
Version: 7.2, 7.3 / 4.1
Vulnerability: Untrusted Search Path
Severity: High (7.8 CVSS)

Prediction: Patches available 2026-08-14
What Undercode Say:
The vulnerability revolves around improper scrubbing of `LIBPATH` and `LD_LIBRARY_PATH` in setuid binaries. To check if your system is vulnerable, review the environment variables of running processes:
ps -ef | grep -E "setuid|setgid" cat /proc//environ | tr '\0' '\n' | grep -E "LIBPATH|LD_LIBRARY_PATH"
To identify which binaries are affected, audit setuid programs that do not sanitize their environment:
find / -perm -4000 -type f -exec ls -la {} \; 2>/dev/null
To demonstrate the flaw, an attacker could create a malicious shared library:
echo 'void <strong>attribute</strong>((constructor)) init() { system("/bin/sh"); }' > exploit.c
gcc -shared -o /tmp/libexploit.so exploit.c
export LIBPATH=/tmp
/usr/bin/vulnerable_setuid_binary
Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)
To exploit this vulnerability, a local attacker would:
- Create a malicious shared library with a constructor function that executes arbitrary commands.
- Compile the library and place it in a writable directory (e.g.,
/tmp). - Set the `LIBPATH` or `LD_LIBRARY_PATH` environment variable to point to that directory.
- Execute a vulnerable setuid binary that does not scrub environment variables.
- The binary loads the malicious library, and the constructor function executes with elevated privileges.
Protection:
- Apply the appropriate AIX Service Pack or VIOS Fix Pack from IBM Fix Central.
- For AIX: Upgrade to AIX 7.3 TL04 SP2, 7.3 TL03 SP3, 7.3 TL02 SP5, or 7.2 TL05 SP13.
- For VIOS: Upgrade to VIOS 4.1.2.20, 4.1.1.30, or 4.1.0.50.
- Restrict local access to trusted users only.
- Monitor system logs for unusual environment variable manipulation.
- Consider using mandatory access controls (e.g., SELinux, Trusted AIX) to limit library loading paths.
Impact:
Successful exploitation allows a local attacker to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the affected process—typically root. This can lead to:
– Confidentiality breach: Reading sensitive files, including passwords, configuration data, and user information.
– Integrity compromise: Modifying system files, installing backdoors, or altering security policies.
– Availability impact: Crashing critical processes, causing denial of service, or rendering the system unusable.
Given the local attack vector and low complexity, this vulnerability poses a significant risk to any organization running affected versions of IBM AIX or PowerVM VIOS with untrusted local users.
