IBM AIX / PowerVM VIOS, Privilege Escalation, CVE-2026-16925 (High) -DC-Aug2026-1831

Listen to this Post

CVE-2026-16925 is a vulnerability affecting IBM AIX versions 7.2 and 7.3, as well as IBM PowerVM VIOS version 4.1. The core of the issue lies in improper authorization, which allows a local attacker to escalate their privileges on the affected system.
In UNIX and UNIX-like operating systems such as AIX, privilege escalation vulnerabilities are particularly critical as they can allow a low-privileged user to gain root or administrative control. The “improper authorization” weakness (CWE-285) indicates that the system fails to properly verify whether a user has the necessary permissions to perform certain actions. This could manifest in various ways—for example, a setuid binary that does not correctly drop privileges before executing user-controlled input, or a system service that incorrectly handles authorization tokens.
For this specific CVE, the attack vector is local (AV:L), meaning the attacker must already have the ability to execute code or commands on the target system. The attack complexity is low (AC:L), suggesting that exploiting this vulnerability does not require advanced knowledge or special conditions. The privileges required are low (PR:L), indicating that the attacker only needs a standard user account, not administrative credentials. User interaction is not required (UI:N), so the attack can be carried out without any action from a victim user.
The NVD (National Vulnerability Database) has assessed this vulnerability with a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.8, rating it as HIGH severity. The vector string for this assessment is CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H, indicating a full impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. IBM Corporation, as the CNA (CVE Numbering Authority), has assigned a slightly lower score of 7.1, also rated HIGH, with the vector CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:H/A:H—noting no impact on confidentiality according to their assessment.
The affected software configurations are clearly defined. For VIOS, versions from 4.1.0 up to (but excluding) 4.1.0.50, from 4.1.1.0 up to (excluding) 4.1.1.30, and from 4.1.2.0 up to (excluding) 4.1.2.20 are vulnerable. For AIX, affected versions include 7.2.5 up to 7.2.5.212, 7.3.2 up to 7.3.2.5, 7.3.3 up to 7.3.3.2, and 7.3.4 up to 7.3.4.1. IBM has released security updates to address this vulnerability, which can be obtained from IBM Fix Central. Applying these fixes is crucial to mitigate the risk of local privilege escalation.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: IBM AIX / VIOS
Version: 7.2, 7.3 / 4.1
Vulnerability: Improper Authorization
Severity: High (7.8)
Date: 08/20/2026

Prediction: Patch already available

What Undercode Say:

The vulnerability stems from improper authorization checks within the AIX kernel or a privileged system component. A local attacker with a standard user account can exploit this flaw to execute arbitrary code with elevated privileges.

Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)

Example of a potential exploit scenario
This is a conceptual demonstration, not a working exploit
1. Identify a vulnerable setuid binary or system call
2. Craft input that triggers the improper authorization flaw
3. Execute the crafted input to gain root privileges
Hypothetical command to check system version
oslevel -s
Hypothetical command to check VIOS level
ioslevel

Protection:

Apply the official security updates provided by IBM. The fixes are available in the following service packs and fix packs:
– AIX 7.3 TL04 SP2
– AIX 7.3 TL03 SP3
– AIX 7.3 TL02 SP5
– AIX 7.2 TL05 SP13
– VIOS 4.1.2 FP 4.1.2.20
– VIOS 4.1.1 FP 4.1.1.30
– VIOS 4.1.0 FP 4.1.0.50
These updates can be downloaded from IBM Fix Central. A system reboot is required after applying the patches, though AIX Live Update can be used to avoid downtime. For VIOS 4.1.0 and 4.1.1, additional steps are required to migrate to PostgreSQL 15 after applying the fixes.

Impact:

Successful exploitation allows a local attacker to gain elevated privileges, potentially leading to complete system compromise. The attacker could read sensitive files, modify system configurations, install malware, or disrupt system operations. Given the local attack vector and low complexity, this vulnerability poses a significant risk in multi-user environments or where untrusted users have local access.
