CVE-2026-16865 is a high-severity OS command injection vulnerability affecting IBM AIX versions 7.2 and 7.3, as well as IBM PowerVM VIOS 4.1. The vulnerability resides in improper input sanitization, allowing a remote attacker to inject and execute arbitrary operating system commands on the target system. This flaw is classified under CWE-78 (Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an OS Command).
The attack vector is adjacent network-based, meaning the attacker must have network access to the affected system’s management interface. The attack complexity is low, requiring no privileges and no user interaction. Once exploited, the attacker gains the ability to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the vulnerable process — potentially leading to full system compromise. The CVSS v3.1 base score is 8.8 (High) with the vector string: CVSS:3.1/AV:A/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H. The vulnerability impacts confidentiality, integrity, and availability all at a HIGH level.
IBM has assigned APARs (Authorized Program Analysis Reports) to address this vulnerability across affected AIX levels and VIOS versions. AIX fixes are available via Service Packs: AIX 7.3 TL04 SP2, AIX 7.3 TL03 SP3, AIX 7.3 TL02 SP5, and AIX 7.2 TL05 SP13. VIOS fixes are available via Fix Packs: VIOS 4.1.2.20, VIOS 4.1.1.30, and VIOS 4.1.0.50. These fixes can be downloaded from IBM Fix Central. A logical partition (LPAR) reboot is required to complete the update; however, on AIX, Live Update can be used to avoid a reboot. IBM strongly recommends addressing the vulnerability immediately.

The vulnerability arises from improper sanitization of user-supplied input passed to OS-level command execution functions. An attacker could craft a malicious payload containing shell metacharacters (;, |, &, `, $()) within parameters sent to the affected service. For example, if an application passes unsanitized input to `system()` or popen():
