CVE-2026-17145 is a critical vulnerability affecting IBM AIX versions 7.2 and 7.3, as well as IBM PowerVM VIOS (Virtual I/O Server) version 4.1. The core issue resides in improper privilege management, classified under CWE-269. This weakness means the affected software fails to correctly restrict or verify the permissions assigned to a user or process, creating an unintended sphere of control.
The vulnerability allows a remote, unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code on the target system. The attack vector is network-based (AV:N) with low attack complexity (AC:L), requiring no privileges (PR:N) and no user interaction (UI:N). This makes the flaw particularly dangerous as it can be exploited remotely without any prior authentication or user involvement.
The root cause is improper handling of privilege assignments within the operating system and virtualization layer. An attacker can send specially crafted, unauthorized requests over a network to the target system. These requests trigger the improperly managed privilege functions, allowing the attacker to bypass intended security controls and execute unauthorized code with elevated system privileges. The vulnerability impacts confidentiality, integrity, and availability, all rated as High (C:H/I:H/A:H).
IBM AIX is a proprietary Unix operating system used for mission-critical enterprise workloads, while PowerVM VIOS manages physical hardware resources and provides virtualization services for AIX environments in data centers. Although these systems are network-reachable, they are typically deployed in private, internal enterprise data center environments and rarely exposed directly to the public internet. However, internal network segmentation and access controls may not always be sufficient to prevent exploitation if an attacker gains network access.
