CVE-2026-17141 is a critical buffer overflow vulnerability affecting IBM AIX versions 7.2 and 7.3, as well as IBM PowerVM Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) version 4.1. The flaw is rooted in improper memory management, specifically classified under CWE-120 (Buffer Copy without Checking Size of Input). When the affected software processes input data, it fails to verify that the size of the incoming buffer is less than the allocated output buffer, leading to adjacent memory being overwritten with attacker-controlled values.
This vulnerability typically manifests in network-facing services or system utilities that handle external requests without rigorous bounds checking. A remote, unauthenticated attacker can craft maliciously formatted data packets designed specifically to overflow memory buffers during processing operations. The overflow overwrites critical control structures—such as return addresses, function pointers, or exception handlers—embedded within adjacent memory locations. By carefully crafting the payload, an attacker can redirect program execution flow toward injected shellcode.
The attack requires no authentication and can be initiated remotely, making the barrier to entry exceptionally low. On standalone AIX instances, successful exploitation results in complete loss of confidentiality, integrity, and availability for the affected host. However, the impact is amplified significantly in PowerVM VIOS environments because VIOS serves as the hypervisor layer managing virtualized resources for multiple logical partitions. Compromising VIOS grants an attacker control over the underlying hardware abstraction layer, potentially leading to full compromise of all guest operating systems hosted by that partition manager.
IBM has released fixes via APARs and Service Packs. AIX fixes are available through SP13 for 7.2 TL05, SP05 for 7.3 TL02, SP03 for 7.3 TL03, and SP02 for 7.3 TL04. VIOS fixes are available through 4.1.0.50, 4.1.1.30, and 4.1.2.20 fix packs. These fixes are cumulative and can be applied on top of any earlier affected level. Administrators are strongly urged to apply these patches immediately, as exploitation is considered easy and the vulnerability has been rated with a CVSS base score of 9.8 (CRITICAL).

The attack vector involves sending a specially crafted network packet to a vulnerable service. The packet contains payload data that exceeds the allocated buffer size, overwriting the return address on the stack. Upon function return, the overwritten address redirects execution to attacker-injected shellcode, granting remote code execution with the privileges of the compromised process. Authentication is not required.
Protection:
- Immediate Patching: Apply the official IBM fixes immediately. AIX SPs and VIOS FPs are available from IBM Fix Central. A Logical Partition (LPAR) reboot is required to complete the update; on AIX, Live Update can be used to avoid a reboot.
- Network Controls: Restrict access to vulnerable services from untrusted networks using firewall rules.
- Intrusion Detection: Deploy IDS/IPS systems with signatures for known buffer overflow exploitation patterns.
- Workaround: If patching is not immediately feasible, consider disabling or restricting network-facing services that are known to be vulnerable until patches can be applied.

Successful exploitation of CVE-2026-17141 allows a remote, unauthenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the compromised process. On AIX systems, this results in complete loss of confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The vulnerability requires no user interaction and has a low attack complexity, making it highly attractive for malicious actors.
