The CVE-2025-58279 vulnerability is a local permission control flaw within the media library module on certain Huawei devices. It operates as a local race condition where an attacker, with low-privileged access (PR:L), can manipulate the timing of media file operations. By executing specific sequences of file access requests concurrently with legitimate media library functions, the attacker can bypass intended permission checks. This occurs due to insufficient synchronization (time-of-check-time-of-use, TOCTOU) when the module verifies and then accesses media assets. The attack requires local execution (AV:L) and high user interaction (UI:R), such as tricking a user into performing an action, and has high attack complexity (AC:H). Successful exploitation does not affect integrity or availability but allows unauthorized read access (C:H), compromising the confidentiality of sensitive media files stored within the library’s protected scope.
Platform: HarmonyOS
Version: Affected versions
Vulnerability: Permission bypass
Severity: Medium
date: 12/08/2025
Prediction: Patch mid-January 2026

Simulating file state check race
while true; do
ls -la /path/to/media/database
cat /proc/$(pidof mediaserver)/status | grep -i context
done
Attempting concurrent access
./malicious_app &
adb shell am start -a android.intent.action.VIEW -d “content://media/external/file” &
How Exploit:
1. Attacker installs a malicious, low-privilege application.
- The app repeatedly calls specific media library intents or content provider URIs.
- It races against a legitimate system process performing an update or scan.
- Exploits the narrow timing window where permissions are not re-validated.
- Successfully reads or exports media files (e.g., photos, videos) that should be restricted.
Protection from this CVE:
Apply vendor update.
Restrict app installations.
Monitor file access logs.
Impact:
Unauthorized data disclosure.
Compromised user privacy.
No system compromise.
