The CVE-2025-54639 vulnerability is a deserialization flaw within the Parcel data container system in Huawei’s HarmonyOS. Parcels are used for high-performance inter-process communication (IPC), marshalling objects into a serialized byte stream. The vulnerability occurs during the deserialization (readFromParcel) of specific attribute objects. When an application passes a maliciously crafted Parcel with mismatched or unexpected data types, the deserialization logic fails to properly validate the object structure before casting. This causes a type confusion or mismatch, where the code attempts to interpret data as an incorrect class type. The subsequent operations on this malformed object lead to an unhandled exception or memory corruption within the system service managing playback controls. This triggers a denial-of-service condition, crashing the service thread responsible for the user interface, which manifests as a playback control screen display exception. The attack is local, requiring the attacker to have installed a malicious application.
Platform: Huawei HarmonyOS devices
Version: HarmonyOS 15.0
Vulnerability: Parcel Deserialization Mismatch
Severity: Medium
date: 2025-08-06
Prediction: Patch 2025-10-15
What Undercode Say:
Analytics
bash
adb shell dumpsys activity services | grep -i playback
bash
logcat | grep -E “Parcel|TypeCast|PlaybackService”
Code
java
// Pseudocode of flawed deserialization
public void readFromParcel(Parcel in) {
this.attribute = in.readString(); // Expected String
// Missing type validation before cast
this.controlObject = (PlaybackControl) in.readParcelable();
}
How Exploit:
1. Develop malicious app.
2. Craft Parcel with type mismatch.
3. Target playback service binder.
4. Trigger deserialization via intent.
5. Cause service crash.
Protection from this CVE
- Apply vendor security patch.
- Validate Parcel data types.
- Use safe deserialization methods.
- Implement exception handling.
Impact:
