HEX-ALERT CVE-2026-32148 Just Updated -DC-Oct2026-3324

Listen to this Post

CVE-2026-32148 represents a significant vulnerability affecting the Hex package manager within the Hex.RemoteConverger module.
The core issue stems from insufficient verification of data authenticity during package resolution and dependency downloading processes.
Hex relies heavily on the mix.lock file to store cryptographic checksums ensuring reproducible and secure builds.
However, a type mismatch flaw prevents proper integrity validation from executing during dependency resolution steps.
Specifically, `Hex.RemoteConverger.verify_resolved/2` fails because lock data utilizes string-based names.
Conversely, the internal verification logic checks against atom-based names during the comparison routine.
This fundamental data type mismatch causes the verification block to be silently skipped entirely.
Because the verification is skipped, tampered packages can be introduced without triggering integrity warnings.
Furthermore, the mix.lock file is automatically rewritten with registry checksums, erasing signs of tampering.
Affected software versions include all releases of hex from version 0.16.0 prior to version 2.4.2.
Supply chain integrity is severely undermined, exposing countless Elixir and Erlang projects to malicious injection.
Attackers can exploit this blind spot to distribute compromised dependencies across enterprise codebases silently.
Remediation mandates upgrading to version 2.4.2 immediately to restore strict cryptographic enforcement.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: Hex Package Manager
Version: 0.16.0 Before 2.4.2
Vulnerability: Dependency Integrity Bypass
Severity: High Severity
Date: April 30 2026

Prediction: Patched In May

What Undercode Say:

Bash Commands and Code Snippets:

Check installed hex version
mix local.hex
Update hex to patched version 2.4.2 or higher
mix archive.install hex hex_2.4.2 --force

Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)

An attacker creates a malicious package version and publishes it to a compromised mirror or registry. When a target project defines this dependency, the type mismatch in `verify_resolved/2` ignores the missing or mismatched atom/string checksums. The build tool accepts the malicious package, overwrites the lockfile, and compiles untrusted code into the application binary.

Protection: from this CVE

Upgrade the hex package manager to version 2.4.2 or newer immediately. Regularly audit your mix.lock files for unauthorized modifications or unexpected checksum changes, and pin dependencies to trusted repository sources.

Impact:

Successful exploitation allows malicious third parties to bypass cryptographic verification checks, inject malicious code into software builds, compromise downstream applications, and execute arbitrary code within developer or production environments without leaving trace evidence in lockfiles.
