Google Chrome, Same Origin Policy Bypass, CVE-2026-9989 (High) -DC-Aug2026-1963

Listen to this Post

CVE-2026-9989 is a vulnerability in Google Chrome’s Media component that allows a remote attacker to bypass the Same Origin Policy (SOP) by exploiting improper implementation in the handling of crafted video files. The issue resides in how Chrome processes video metadata and tracks origins during media playback. Under normal circumstances, the SOP restricts how documents or scripts from one origin interact with resources from another origin. However, due to a flaw in the Media pipeline, a specially crafted video file can cause the browser to mishandle origin checks, effectively allowing the video to access or leak data from a different origin. This occurs because the Media component fails to properly validate the origin of the video frame content before allowing cross-origin access to certain APIs or resources.
The vulnerability affects Chrome versions prior to 148.0.7778.216. When a user opens a malicious video file or a page embedding such a video, an attacker can exploit this flaw to read sensitive information from other origins, such as cookies, local storage, or session tokens. This could lead to session hijacking, data exfiltration, or other cross-origin attacks. The bug was assigned a High severity rating by the Chromium security team, reflecting its potential to compromise user privacy and session integrity. The issue was discovered and reported by an external security researcher, and Google has acknowledged the flaw with a fix in the latest stable release. Users are strongly advised to update to version 148.0.7778.216 or later to mitigate the risk. The vulnerability affects Chrome on Windows, macOS, and Linux platforms.

Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)

No exploit code is provided to prevent misuse. The vulnerability is triggered by serving a malformed video file with manipulated metadata that bypasses origin validation. Attackers would host this video on a malicious site or embed it via iframe, causing Chrome to leak cross-origin data when the video loads.

Protection: from this CVE

  • Update Chrome to version 148.0.7778.216 or later immediately.
  • Enable automatic updates in Chrome settings.
  • Avoid opening video files from untrusted sources.
  • Use content security policies (CSP) to restrict media sources.
  • Consider using a Web Application Firewall (WAF) to block malicious video MIME types.

Impact:

  • Bypass of Same Origin Policy, allowing cross-origin data theft.
  • Exposure of session cookies, tokens, and private user data.
  • Potential for account takeover on vulnerable web applications.
  • Affects all Chrome users on Windows, macOS, and Linux platforms.
  • High severity with immediate patch required to prevent active exploitation.
