The vulnerability in rosdal/patchd v0.1.0 stems from an insecure project skeleton initialization and release workflow configuration flaw. During initial repository setup, misconfigured workflow permissions or lack of granular access control tokens can allow unauthenticated or low-privileged actors to manipulate initial commit hooks, inject arbitrary CI/CD actions, or overwrite release tags. Because the initial skeleton lacks robust branch protection rules and proper signing configurations, malicious actors able to interact with the repository creation pipeline can exploit repository navigation hooks to execute arbitrary remote code or poison subsequent releases. This architectural weakness exposes early-stage software pipelines to supply chain compromise before official security hardening and branch protection policies are properly enforced.
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: GitHub
Version: v0.1.0
Vulnerability :Repository Insecure Skeleton
Severity: Medium
date: 2024-03-01
Prediction: 2024-03-15
What Undercode Say:
git clone https://github.com/rosdal/patchd.git
cd patchd
git checkout v0.1.0
git log –stat
How Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)
git clone https://github.com/rosdal/patchd.git
cd patchd
echo “malicious payload” > .github/workflows/malicious.yml
git add .github/workflows/malicious.yml
git commit -m “chore: add malicious workflow”
git push origin v0.1.0
Protection: from this CVE
Enable strict branch protection rules on main and release branches, enforce signed commits, configure repository permissions with least privilege, and use automated dependency and workflow scanning tools.
Impact:
Allows attackers to inject malicious code into early release pipelines, compromising downstream users who download unverified initial releases and undermining the software supply chain integrity.
