GitHub Enterprise Server, Remote Code Execution, CVE-2026-3854 (Critical) -DC-Oct2026-3088

Listen to this Post

CVE-2026-3854 represents a critical remote code execution vulnerability located within GitHub’s internal git push and proxy infrastructure.
The flaw specifically stems from improper neutralization of special elements and delimiter injection in internal headers.
When users initiate a standard git push command with custom options, these push options are transmitted across system boundaries.
GitHub’s internal git proxy, babeld, serializes these user-supplied push option values directly into an internal X-Stat header.
Downstream backend services rely upon this X-Stat header to enforce security policies and parse parameters as semicolon-delimited key-value pairs.
However, the header parsing logic fails to properly sanitize or escape semicolon characters supplied by the client during transmission.
Furthermore, the internal parsing implementation utilizes a last-write-wins semantic map when processing duplicate keys.
An authenticated user with push access can inject custom metadata fields into the X-Stat header stream via crafted push parameters.
By leveraging this delimiter injection vector, an attacker can manipulate three key configuration settings in sequence.
First, the attacker injects a non-production rails_env value to bypass standard production sandbox restrictions entirely.
Second, an overridden custom_hooks_dir parameter is injected to redirect the base directory where binaries locate hook scripts.
Third, the attacker injects a repo_pre_receive_hooks entry containing a path traversal sequence pointing to an arbitrary binary.
When the proxy or backend service executes the hook logic, it joins the attacker-controlled path with the traversal payload.
This causes the system to execute the targeted arbitrary binary directly without argument validation or containment.
The execution occurs under the privileges of the git application service user on the underlying server host.
On GitHub Enterprise Server instances, this results in full remote code execution and administrative compromise of the node.
On the multi-tenant GitHub.com platform, the git service user possesses broader permissions across multiple customer repositories.
Consequently, this single command injection primitive bridges trust boundaries and exposes significant cross-tenant risks.
The vulnerability highlights the risks of trusting client-supplied strings within internal metadata communication channels.
Complex microservice architectures that rely on custom header deserialization remain highly susceptible to delimiter abuse.
Security teams must ensure rigorous input validation and delimiter encoding across all internal service-to-service calls.
Preventing metadata injection requires strict type checking and explicit rejection of control characters in transit headers.
The discovery of this flaw underscores the effectiveness of advanced binary analysis in uncovering deep infrastructure flaws.
Without timely patching, malicious actors could leverage this flaw to compromise entire enterprise source code repositories.
GitHub acted swiftly to mitigate the vector on hosted infrastructure and release patched server versions for enterprise clients.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: GitHub Enterprise Server
Version: Vulnerable builds prior
Vulnerability: Remote Code Execution
Severity: Critical Risk Level
date: March Tenth 2026

Prediction: Patched Date Released

What Undercode Say:

git push -o 'rails_env=development' -o 'custom_hooks_dir=/tmp/hooks' -o 'repo_pre_receive_hooks=../../bin/sh' origin master
Conceptual payload simulation for X-Stat header injection
payload = "rails_env=development;custom_hooks_dir=/tmp/malicious;repo_pre_receive_hooks=../exploit"
headers = {"X-Stat": payload}
Last-write-wins semantics overwrite previous safe default parameters in backend parsers

Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)

To execute the attack, an attacker establishes authenticated push access to a targeted repository hosted on the instance.
The attacker crafts a specialized git push command embedding multiple push options (-o) containing semicolon delimiters.
These options inject malicious overrides directly into the internal X-Stat serialization header processed by babeld.
The backend parser registers the overridden configuration values due to lack of escaping and last-write-wins map behavior.
The sandbox environment is disabled by switching the runtime environment variable via the injected parameters.
The custom hook directory is pointed to a controlled location containing the traversal sequence.
Upon triggering the push operation, the server resolves the path and executes the payload as the git user.
This yields an interactive shell or arbitrary command execution capability directly on the underlying host infrastructure.

Protection: from this CVE

Administrators must immediately upgrade GitHub Enterprise Server instances to the latest patched security releases.
Ensure that repository push permissions are strictly audited and granted solely to trusted, verified users.
Deploy network monitoring and endpoint detection to flag anomalous process spawning from git service contexts.
Implement strict validation and escaping of internal headers to prevent delimiter and metadata injection vectors.
Review audit logs for unusual push operations containing special characters or suspicious push option strings.

Impact:

Successful exploitation grants an authenticated attacker full remote code execution capabilities on the host.
Attackers gain read and write access to the underlying filesystem and internal service configurations.
On GitHub Enterprise Server, this compromises source code repositories, deployment secrets, and enterprise infrastructure.
On multi-tenant platforms, improper privilege boundaries could theoretically expose data across different customer tenants.
The integrity and confidentiality of the entire code repository environment are severely compromised.
