The vulnerability in the Drupal JSON Field module arises from improper neutralization of user-supplied input before it is rendered on a web page. Specifically, the module fails to adequately sanitize data stored within JSON fields when that data is output to users. An attacker with permissions to create or edit content, typically requiring at least an “authenticated user” role, can craft a malicious payload containing JavaScript code within a JSON field. When a victim, such as an administrator or another user, views a page containing the maliciously crafted JSON data, the stored script is executed in the victim’s browser context. This attack exploits the application’s trust in the data stored in its database, allowing the attacker to perform actions with the victim’s permissions.
Platform: Drupal
Version: <1.5
Vulnerability: Stored XSS
Severity: Moderate
date: 2024-10-30
Prediction: 2024-11-13
What Undercode Say:
Searching for vulnerable versions via Composer composer show drupal/json_field | grep versions Grepping for potentially unsafe output functions in theme files grep -r "json_field" web/themes/custom/ | grep -E "(print|echo|raw|unescaped)"
// Example of unsafe rendering in a Twig template (Vulnerable)
<div class="json-data">
{{ node.field_json_data.value | raw }}
</div>
// Example of safe rendering with auto-escaping (Patched)
<div class="json-data">
{{ node.field_json_data.value }}
</div>
How Exploit:
1. Attacker authenticates to the Drupal site.
- Creates or edits content with a JSON field.
- Inserts malicious script payload into the JSON data.
4. Saves the content.
- Victim views the page containing the malicious content.
- Stored XSS payload executes in the victim’s browser.
Protection from this CVE:
Upgrade JSON Field module to version 1.5 or later.
Implement strict Content Security Policy (CSP) headers.
Sanitize all user-controllable data before output.
Apply the principle of least privilege to user roles.
Impact:
Session hijacking.
Unauthorized actions on behalf of users.
Theft of sensitive data.
Website defacement.
