Discord, Privilege Escalation, CVE-2026-0776 (Critical) -DC-Oct2026-3289

Listen to this Post

The vulnerability known as CVE-2026-0776 is a local privilege escalation flaw affecting the Discord client on Windows platforms, specifically involving an uncontrolled search path element within the `discord_rpc` module. When the Discord desktop application resolves and loads dependencies or dynamic link libraries at startup, it fails to enforce fully qualified paths or strict integrity checks on specific components. This insecure loading mechanism allows local threat actors or malware executing under low privileges to plant a malicious DLL or executable inside an unsecured directory searched prior to system paths. Because Discord is frequently installed in user-writable per-user directories (%APPDATA% or local user profiles), standard user accounts have write access to application execution vectors. Consequently, when the application or its background update framework initializes, it unwittingly loads the attacker-supplied payload, executing arbitrary code with the full privileges of the targeted user session. This flaw poses severe security risks on shared workstations or enterprise endpoints, where malicious actors can leverage local file-drop vectors to escalate privileges, hijack application logic, and maintain persistence across sessions.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: Discord Client
Version: Up to latest
Vulnerability : Uncontrolled Search Path
Severity: Critical
date: 2026-01-23

Prediction: 2026-02-10

What Undercode Say:

Bash Commands and Codes:

Check current Discord installation path and permissions
icacls "%APPDATA%\Discord"
Monitor for suspicious DLL loads or unexpected executable drops in Discord directories using Sysmon
Get-WinEvent -LogName "Microsoft-Windows-Sysmon/Operational" | Where-Object { $<em>.Id -eq 7 -and $</em>.Message -like "Discord" }

Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)

Conceptual local payload drop simulation for uncontrolled search path testing
import os
target_dir = os.path.expanduser(r"~\AppData\Local\Discord\app-1.0.9188\modules\discord_rpc")
os.makedirs(target_dir, exist_ok=True)
payload_path = os.path.join(target_dir, "discord_rpc.dll")
print(f"[] Targeting directory: {target_dir}")
print("[] Placing mock payload for local vulnerability assessment path validation.")

Protection:

Update the Discord desktop application immediately to the latest patched version provided by the vendor.
Restrict standard user write permissions on application installation directories and local profile execution paths.
Enable strict endpoint monitoring using Sysmon Event IDs 1, 7, and 11 to track unauthorized binary drops and module loads from non-standard locations.
Audit shared or multi-user workstations regularly for unauthorized files residing inside user-profile application subdirectories.

Impact:

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability allows local authenticated attackers or limited-privilege malware to execute arbitrary code within the security context of the victim’s Discord process. This can lead to complete session compromise, local privilege escalation, arbitrary file manipulation, and further persistent compromise across the affected endpoint workstation.
