Dell ObjectScale versions prior to 4.3.0.1 contain a Path Traversal vulnerability identified as CVE-2026-59909. This flaw, classified under CWE-35 (Path Traversal: ‘…/…//’), arises when the software uses external input to construct a pathname that should be within a restricted directory but fails to properly neutralize sequences like .../...//. The underlying code processes user-supplied input containing file or directory paths without adequately sanitizing special characters such as dot-dot-slash sequences. An attacker with local access can craft path strings with relative navigation sequences that the application interprets literally, allowing navigation outside the intended application sandbox.
This lack of strict input validation enables unauthorized traversal through the operating system’s file hierarchy, bypassing security boundaries designed to isolate application data. The issue is not in the authentication mechanism but in the authorization and input-handling logic governing file access operations. With read permissions granted by the ObjectScale service’s user context, an attacker can read arbitrary files. More critically, if write access is available, the attacker can overwrite critical configuration files, application binaries, or data stores outside the intended scope. This capability undermines the integrity of the storage management platform and can facilitate further privilege escalation if sensitive system files are modified. Although exploitation requires local access, implying an initial foothold, it represents a critical escalation path for attackers who have breached perimeter defenses. Tampering with configuration files that control cluster behavior, authentication settings, and data replication policies can lead to service disruption, unauthorized access, or complete compromise of the storage infrastructure. A local attacker with low privileges can exploit this vulnerability by providing crafted path strings containing relative navigation sequences. The application fails to strip or resolve these sequences against the allowed base directory. For example, an attacker could attempt to access sensitive files outside the application’s root directory using sequences like `../../../../etc/passwd` or the specific variant .../...//.../...//etc/passwd. Because the software does not properly neutralize these sequences, the filesystem operations resolve to locations outside the restricted directory. This allows reading of arbitrary files if read permissions exist, or modification/tampering of files if write permissions are available.

Protection:

Upgrade Dell ObjectScale to version 4.3.0.1 or later, which includes code changes enforcing strict validation of file paths and ensuring all user-supplied inputs are resolved against a restricted base directory before filesystem API calls. This can lead to service disruption, unauthorized access to stored objects, complete compromise of the storage infrastructure, and potential privilege escalation.
