DataChain, Deserialization of Untrusted Data, CVE-2025-XXXXX (Low)

Listen to this Post

The vulnerability in the DataChain library exists within the `loader.py` module. This module automatically reads and deserializes data from specific environment variables, namely `DATACHAIN__METASTORE` and DATACHAIN__WAREHOUSE, during the application’s initialization phase. The deserialization process does not perform adequate validation of the input data, treating it as trusted. An attacker who can control the content of these environment variables can craft a malicious serialized object. When this object is deserialized by the library, it triggers the execution of arbitrary code within the context of the application, leading to a compromise of the system.
Platform: DataChain
Version: (pre-patch versions)

Vulnerability : Remote Code Execution

Severity: Low

date: 2025-10-02

Prediction: Expected Patch Date: 2025-10-16

What Undercode Say:

echo $DATACHAIN__METASTORE
loader.py vulnerable code snippet
import os, pickle
data = os.getenv('DATACHAIN__METASTORE')
if data:
obj = pickle.loads(data.encode()) Deserialization point

How Exploit:

export DATACHAIN__METASTORE=$(python -c "import pickle; import os; pickle.dump(os.system('id'), open('/tmp/exploit','wb'))" | base64)
python my_datachain_app.py

Protection from this CVE

Update DataChain to the patched version once released. Avoid exposing environment variables to untrusted users. Implement strict controls over which users can set `DATACHAIN__METASTORE` and DATACHAIN__WAREHOUSE. Consider using a safe serialization format or implementing allow-list validation for deserialized data.

Impact:

Arbitrary code execution on the host system running the vulnerable DataChain application, potentially leading to full system compromise.
