The vulnerability occurs in the D-Link R15 (AX1500) router’s web administration interface. During a password change request, the application processes the “model name” parameter without proper input validation. An attacker can craft a malicious HTTP POST request with shell commands embedded in the model name field. The httpd service, which handles web requests, fails to sanitize this input before passing it to system calls. This allows the injected commands to be executed with root privileges. The injection point is in the password change functionality accessible via the web interface. By manipulating the model name, arbitrary commands can be run on the device. The vulnerability affects firmware version 1.20.01 and below. Command injection happens due to direct concatenation of the model name into a shell command without escaping. This leads to remote code execution if the web interface is exposed. Attackers can exploit this without authentication by sending crafted requests. Commands like ‘cat /etc/passwd’ or ‘wget’ can be injected to steal data or download malware. The httpd service runs with elevated permissions, enabling full device compromise. This poses a significant risk as it allows complete control over the router. Vulnerable devices can be used to modify configurations or launch further attacks. The lack of input validation makes exploitation straightforward. This CVE highlights critical security flaws in embedded device firmware.
