The CVE-2025-13547 vulnerability originates from insufficient input validation in the DDNS configuration form handler within the D-Link router firmware. Specifically, the `/boafrm/formDdns` endpoint processes the `submit-url` parameter without performing proper bounds checking or sanitization. When a remote attacker sends a crafted HTTP POST request containing an excessively long `submit-url` value, it exceeds the pre-allocated buffer size in memory. This leads to memory corruption, typically a buffer overflow, which can overwrite adjacent memory regions. The lack of safeguards allows arbitrary data to be written beyond the buffer’s limits, potentially corrupting critical stack or heap structures. Depending on the firmware’s memory layout, this corruption can hijack the control flow by overwriting return addresses or function pointers. Attackers can exploit this to execute arbitrary code on the device, often leveraging shellcode or ROP chains. The attack is remotely exploitable without authentication, making it severe for internet-facing routers. Published exploits demonstrate how to craft malicious requests to trigger this flaw, leading to denial of service or full device compromise. Memory corruption in embedded systems like these routers is critical due to limited security mechanisms and the potential for persistent access.
