The cve-search_mcp repository recently received a critical update addressing input validation weaknesses within its core parameters and request handlers.
Input validation vulnerabilities typically occur when an application receives untrusted data from an external source—such as an MCP client, user input, or an external API—without properly sanitizing, filtering, or validating it against a strict set of safety criteria.
In the context of Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, which bridge AI language models with local tools and APIs, improper input validation can expose underlying execution environments to injection attacks, path traversal, unexpected type juggling, or malformed payload crashes.
When a client sends a request containing malicious or unexpected structures, the server might blindly process the input, leading to unhandled exceptions or memory corruption.
Specifically, in cve-search_mcp, interactions with external lookup APIs or local query handlers require parsing parameters like CVE IDs, vendor names, and product strings.
If these parameters lack rigorous validation, attackers could inject anomalous characters, excessive lengths, or control sequences to disrupt service or manipulate database queries.
The latest release, v1.9.408, explicitly targets and resolves these input validation gaps by implementing strict type checking, input length boundaries, and sanitization routines before any data reaches backend handlers.
Furthermore, the inclusion of error handling and a caching layer in companion releases (like v1.2.0) fortifies the application against denial-of-service vectors caused by repeated malformed requests.
By ensuring that every incoming argument conforms to expected schemas, the server neutralizes potential exploit vectors before they can be leveraged against downstream systems or integrated development environments.
Maintaining strict boundary checks ensures long-term security resilience across all client interactions.
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: cve-search_mcp Python Server
Version: v1.9.408
Vulnerability: Input Validation Flaw
Severity: Medium Risk
date: 16 Oct 2026
Prediction: Patched On Release
What Undercode Say:
Bash Commands and Codes
git clone https://github.com/derya879/cve-search_mcp.git cd cve-search_mcp uv sync python main.py
def validate_input(val):
if not isinstance(val, str) or len(val) > 100:
raise ValueError("Invalid input format")
return sanitize(val)
Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)
Conceptual payload test for unvalidated input handling malformed_payload = "../../../etc/passwd" response = client.query_cve(malformed_payload) print(response.status_code)
Protection: from this CVE
Update to version v1.9.408 or later immediately, ensure all input parameters are strictly typed, implement robust schema validation using libraries like Pydantic, and restrict untrusted data from reaching core query functions without proper sanitization.
Impact:
Exploitation of input validation weaknesses in MCP servers can lead to denial of service, unexpected application crashes, information disclosure, or potential command execution if integrated with vulnerable downstream tools or databases.
