CVE-2024-37888 Just Updated -DC-Oct2026-3302

Listen to this Post

CVE-2024-37888 represents a security vulnerability discovered in the Open Link plugin for CKEditor 4.
The flaw specifically targets the rich text editing environment provided by the software package.
It arises because the plugin fails to sanitize user input within link attributes properly.
Specifically, the href attribute can be abused to inject malicious JavaScript code payloads.
The Open Link plugin extends the standard editor context menu to open links in new tabs.
When a user interacts with the editor, custom configurations enable this plug-in behavior.
Attackers craft malicious links containing javascript URIs directly inside the source view.
Once the content switches back to WYSIWYG mode, the malicious link becomes active and clickable.
When an unsuspecting user clicks the engineered link inside the editor interface, execution occurs.
The malicious script runs within the context of the victim browser session.
This DOM-based Cross-Site Scripting vulnerability bypasses standard editor filtering mechanisms.
The vulnerability is isolated entirely within the Open Link plugin codebase rather than core files.
It affects all versions of the Open Link plugin prior to version 1.0.5.
CVSS 3.1 scoring rates this vulnerability as medium severity with a score of 6.1.
The attack vector is network-based requiring low privileges but active user interaction.
Mitigation requires updating the plugin files immediately to version 1.0.5 or newer.
Developers must also implement robust output encoding wherever editor content is rendered.
Failure to patch leaves web applications exposed to session hijacking and manipulation.
Security analysts track this vulnerability carefully despite its reliance on user interaction.
Understanding the root cause ensures better defensive configurations for rich text editors.
Proper handling of link attributes prevents arbitrary script execution vulnerabilities completely.
Code reviews of client-side plugins are essential to catch missing input sanitization flaws.
Configuration files like config.js often dictate how plugins load and behave in production.
Disabling vulnerable features or enforcing strict content security policies helps reduce risk.
Penetration testers frequently check third-party plugins for hidden XSS vectors.
Rich text editors are high-value targets because they process untrusted user input directly.
Exploits against this CVE require the victim to actively click the crafted hyperlink.
Automated scanners can detect outdated plugin versions by checking asset fingerprints.
Maintainers responded quickly by releasing version 1.0.5 to fix the underlying parsing bug.
System administrators should audit their dependency trees regularly for vulnerable components.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: CKEditor
Version: Below 1.0.5
Vulnerability: XSS
Severity: Medium
Date: June 2024

Prediction: Patched 2024

What Undercode Say

git clone https://github.com/7Ragnarok7/CVE-2024-37888.git
cd CVE-2024-37888
npm install
node server.js
CKEDITOR.editorConfig = function( config ) {
config.extraPlugins = 'openlink';
config.linkShowTargetTab = false;
config.openlink_modifier = 0;
config.openlink_enableReadOnly = true;
};

Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)

To simulate the vulnerability, inject the payload into the CKEditor source view:

<a href="javascript:alert(document.domain)">XSS Test</a>

Switch back to WYSIWYG mode, click the link within the editor, and observe the JavaScript execution triggered in the new browser tab.

Protection: from this CVE

Upgrade the Open Link plugin to version 1.0.5 or higher where proper attribute sanitization is implemented. Ensure proper output encoding and content security policies are enforced across web applications using CKEditor 4.

Impact:

Successful exploitation allows attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript code within the context of the victim’s browser session. This can lead to session hijacking, credential theft, and unauthorized actions performed on behalf of the authenticated user.
