Croogo CMS, Path Traversal Vulnerability (High)

Listen to this Post

The path traversal vulnerability in Croogo CMS 4.0.7 operates through the ‘edit-file’ parameter in certain application endpoints. Attackers can craft HTTP requests with directory traversal sequences, such as ‘../’, in the ‘edit-file’ parameter to bypass intended file access restrictions. This parameter is typically used for file editing functionalities within the CMS administration or theme components. When processed by the server without proper validation or sanitization, the crafted path allows traversal outside the intended directory. Specifically, the vulnerability arises from insufficient input sanitization that fails to neutralize special elements within the pathname. Remote attackers can exploit this by sending a GET or POST request with a manipulated ‘edit-file’ value targeting sensitive system files. For example, a request might include ‘edit-file=../../../../etc/passwd’ to access the password file. The server interprets this path relative to the web root, leading to unauthorized file reads. This vulnerability is particularly critical because it can be triggered without authentication if the affected endpoint is accessible. The flaw likely exists in file management modules that handle user-supplied file paths for editing templates or configurations. By leveraging this, attackers can disclose arbitrary files on the server, including configuration files, source code, or credentials. The impact is exacerbated if the CMS runs with high privileges, allowing access to critical system files. This vulnerability is a classic path traversal issue where user input is directly used in filesystem operations without canonicalization checks. Mitigation requires validating and sanitizing all user inputs that reference filesystem paths.
Platform: Croogo CMS

Vulnerability: Path Traversal
Severity: High
Date: Dec 26 2025

Prediction: Patch Jan 2026

What Undercode Say:

Analytics

curl -v “http://target/croogo/path?edit-file=../../../../etc/passwd”

grep -r “edit-file” croogo_app/

find /var/www -name “.php” -exec grep -l “edit-file” {} \;

How Exploit

Craft malicious edit-file parameter with traversal sequences to access sensitive files remotely via HTTP requests.

Protection from this CVE
