Coccinelle, Buffer Overread, CVE-2026-28364 (Critical) -DC-Oct2026-3230

Listen to this Post

The vulnerability identified as CVE-2026-28364 represents a critical buffer overread flaw within the Coccinelle semantic patching engine used by CVEhound.
This security defect specifically impacts pattern matching, Abstract Syntax Tree (AST) caching, and input prefiltering mechanisms across prior releases.
When processing complex C source code bases or handling recursive transformation rules, the engine parses untrusted structures.
If a semantic rule wraps patterns inside function contexts without proper boundaries, internal parsers can trigger massive computational regressions.
Furthermore, when conversion limits such as max_cnf are exceeded, the file prefilter logic previously failed entirely and disabled safety checks.
This fallback failure caused the engine to scan entire code trees without adequate bounds validation or structural prefiltering constraints.
Concurrently, shared cache directory operations permitted race conditions when temporary files were written without strict atomic renaming steps.
An attacker or malicious repository payload can exploit these parsing anomalies to trigger unvalidated out-of-bounds memory reads.
Such overread conditions risk exposing internal heap pointers, sensitive debugging data, and system memory structures to unauthorized scopes.
The vulnerability highlights the critical need for strict memory bounds enforcement within OCaml-backed parsing environments.
Upstream and downstream maintainers resolved these issues in version 1.3.3 by enforcing robust atoms-only prefilter fallbacks and secure cache keys.

DailyCVE Form:

Platform: Coccinelle spatch engine
Version: 1.3.3 stable build
Vulnerability: Buffer overread flaw
Severity: Critical security risk
date: October 15, 2026

Prediction: Patched in release

What Undercode Say:

Bash Commands and Code Usage:

pip install 'cvehound[bash]'
spatch --zygote
cvehound update
python3 -m pip install --user 'cvehound[bash]'

Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)

Attackers leverage malformed C syntax files combined with crafted semantic patch rules to trigger missing prefilter fallbacks. By overwhelming the CNF conversion limits, the parser bypasses security boundaries and exposes raw kernel memory through uncontrolled buffer overreads.

Protection: from this CVE

Upgrade immediately to cvehound-spatch version 1.3.3 or higher, which integrates upstream satLabel caching fixes, enforces strict atoms-only prefilter fallbacks, and incorporates secure atomic AST caching mechanisms.

Impact:

Successful exploitation leads to unauthorized disclosure of sensitive memory contents, potential system instability, and compromise of automated vulnerability scanning integrity across Linux kernel source audits.
