CVE-2026-88771 is a critical improper input validation vulnerability (CWE-20) that affects Citrix NetScaler ADC and Citrix NetScaler Gateway appliances. The flaw resides in the input handling mechanisms of the appliance’s externally exposed interfaces, where insufficient validation of user-supplied data allows an unauthenticated, remote attacker to craft malicious requests that are processed without proper sanitization. Because the vulnerability requires no authentication, no user interaction, and no specific preconditions for exploitation, every internet-facing NetScaler ADC or Gateway deployment running an affected build is potentially at risk.
The attack vector is network-based (AV:N) with low attack complexity (AC:L) and no privileges required (PR:N), yielding a CVSS 4.0 base score of 9.5 — Critical. The scope of impact is total: high confidentiality, integrity, and availability impacts on both the vulnerable system and subsequent systems (VC:H/VI:H/VA:H/SC:H/SI:H/SA:H). This means a successful exploit can result in complete compromise of the appliance, including the ability to execute arbitrary commands with the privileges of the NetScaler service, read or modify sensitive configuration data, and pivot to internal network segments.
Citrix has confirmed active exploitation of CVE-2026-88771 in the wild, and proof-of-concept code has been observed circulating among threat actors. The vulnerability affects all customer-managed deployments of NetScaler ADC and NetScaler Gateway prior to version 14.1-73.37 and 13.1-64.23, including FIPS and NDcPP variants. Because NetScaler appliances frequently serve as the primary ingress point for enterprise applications — handling SSL VPN, ICA Proxy, CVPN, and RDP Proxy traffic — a compromised appliance represents a severe risk to the entire downstream infrastructure.
The root cause of the vulnerability lies in the improper validation of input data before it is processed by the appliance’s command execution or configuration subsystems. When an attacker sends a specially crafted request to an exposed endpoint, the lack of proper input sanitization allows the payload to bypass intended security controls and reach sensitive functions. This class of vulnerability (CWE-20) is particularly dangerous in network edge devices because it often provides a direct path to remote code execution without requiring any prior foothold.
DailyCVE Form:
Platform: Citrix NetScaler ADC & Gateway

What Undercode Say:
Check NetScaler ADC version via CLI
show version
Check NetScaler Gateway version via CLI
show ns version
Check if the appliance is reachable on the management interface
curl -sk https://<netscaler-ip>/nitro/v1/config/nsversion
Check for the presence of the vulnerable endpoint (example NITRO API path)
curl -sk -X POST https://<netscaler-ip>/nitro/v1/config/ -H "Content-Type: application/json" -d '{"sessionid":"test"}'
Verify the fix by checking the build number against the patched versions
Patched builds: 14.1-73.37, 13.1-64.23, 14.1-73.37 FIPS, 13.1.37.279 FIPS/NDcPP
Example of how improper input validation may be triggered
(For educational understanding only — not a weaponized exploit)
import requests
target = "https://<netscaler-ip>"
endpoint = "/nitro/v1/config/"
Malformed input that bypasses validation
payload = {
"sessionid": "'; whoami; "
}
try:
response = requests.post(target + endpoint, json=payload, verify=False)
print("Response status:", response.status_code)
print("Response body:", response.text[:500])
except Exception as e:
print("Request failed:", e)
Exploit: (Educational Purposes!)
The exploitation of CVE-2026-88771 leverages the improper input validation flaw to inject arbitrary commands into a request processed by the NetScaler appliance. An attacker with network access to the management interface or an exposed service endpoint can send a crafted request containing command injection payloads. Because the input is not properly sanitized, the payload is passed to a command execution context, allowing the attacker to run arbitrary OS commands as the NetScaler service user. Successful exploitation grants the attacker the ability to read and modify the appliance configuration, extract credentials, deploy web shells, and establish persistence. Public proof-of-concept code has been observed in the wild, and active exploitation has been confirmed by Citrix.

Protection: from this CVE
- Immediate Upgrade: Update all NetScaler ADC and Gateway appliances to version 14.1-73.37 or later, or 13.1-64.23 or later. For FIPS deployments, upgrade to 14.1-73.37 FIPS or 13.1.37.279 FIPS/NDcPP.
- Compromise Assessment: Given confirmed in-the-wild exploitation, Citrix and CERT-EU strongly recommend running a full compromise assessment on any internet-facing appliance that ran an affected build before patching. Check for unauthorized configuration changes, unexpected processes, and anomalous network connections.
- Network Segmentation: Restrict management interface access to trusted internal networks only. Do not expose the NITRO API or management GUI to the public internet.
- Enhanced ISN Generation: For deployments where TCP configurations are enabled, enable Enhanced ISN Generation to mitigate related TCP sequence prediction risks.
- Monitoring: Monitor appliance logs for suspicious command execution attempts, unexpected outbound connections, and unusual API requests targeting the NITRO interface.
Impact:
Successful exploitation of CVE-2026-88771 results in complete compromise of the NetScaler appliance. The attacker gains the ability to execute arbitrary commands with the privileges of the NetScaler service, which typically runs with elevated system access. This enables full control over the appliance’s configuration, including SSL certificate private keys, session tokens, authentication credentials, and policy configurations. The attacker can use the compromised appliance as a pivot point to access internal network segments, intercept or modify traffic passing through the gateway, and deploy persistent backdoors. Given that NetScaler ADC and Gateway are frequently deployed as the primary remote access gateway for enterprise applications, a successful exploit can lead to widespread data breach, lateral movement across the enterprise, and long-term undetected presence within the network. The CVSS 4.0 score of 9.5 reflects the critical nature of these impacts, with high confidentiality, integrity, and availability losses at both the vulnerable system and subsequent system levels.
