This vulnerability stems from improper validation of user-supplied input within HTTP requests processed by the web-based management interface. An unauthenticated remote attacker can send a sequence of specially crafted HTTP packets to targeted endpoints on the device. The flaw exists because the application fails to adequately sanitize parameters before passing them to the underlying operating system shell. By manipulating specific arguments in these requests, an attacker can inject arbitrary commands. The injected commands are executed with the privileges of the web application service, typically a non-root user. This initial access provides a foothold on the system. The vulnerability is remotely exploitable over the network without requiring user interaction. The attack complexity is low, as no advanced techniques are needed beyond crafting malicious HTTP traffic. The payload delivery targets the management interface listening on standard HTTP/HTTPS ports. Successful exploitation results in command execution in the context of the application user. Subsequently, the attacker can leverage local privilege escalation vectors to gain root-level access. The CVSS vector reflects the network attack vector, low attack complexity, and no privileges required. The critical severity arises from the potential for complete system takeover. Affected software includes Cisco Unified Communications Manager, Session Management Edition, IM & Presence Service, Unity Connection, and Webex Calling Dedicated Instance. The vulnerability allows bypassing authentication mechanisms entirely. It affects multiple versions where the input validation routine is insufficient. The crafted requests exploit parsing discrepancies in the web framework. This enables direct interaction with the operating system command interpreter. Patches address the issue by implementing proper input sanitization and validation checks.
