ChatBot Application, Stored Cross-Site Scripting, CVE-2024-1234 (Critical)

Listen to this Post

How the mentioned CVE works:

The vulnerability is a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw within the application’s chat logging feature. The system fails to properly sanitize user-supplied input, allowing attackers to inject malicious HTML tags such as `

` and `` directly into the chat log. When an administrator later reviews these logs through the application’s web interface, the embedded malicious code is rendered and executed in the admin’s browser context. The proof-of-concept exploits an `` element of type ‘image’ with a crafted `formaction` attribute containing JavaScript. This code executes when the admin clicks the injected image, enabling the attacker to steal the admin’s session tokens or credentials stored in localStorage, ultimately leading to full account compromise.
Platform: ChatBot Application
Version: v2.5.1
Vulnerability: Stored XSS
Severity: Critical

date: 2024-05-15

Prediction: Patch by 2024-06-10

What Undercode Say:

Analytics

Searching for potentially dangerous HTML in logs
grep -r "<input|<form" /var/log/chatbot/
Checking application error logs for XSS filter triggers
tail -f /opt/chatbot/app/logs/error.log | grep -i "sanitization"
// Example of a vulnerable input handling function
function logUserMessage(userInput) {
// VULNERABLE: No sanitization before storage
db.storeMessage(userInput);
}

How Exploit:

Attacker crafts a chat message containing malicious HTML form code. This payload is saved in the database. An administrator views the application’s chat logs. The malicious code executes in the admin’s browser, stealing their authentication token and sending it to an attacker-controlled server.

Protection from this CVE:

Implement strict input sanitization. Encode all user-controlled output. Apply a Content Security Policy (CSP). Use HTTPOnly cookies for sessions.

Impact:

Admin account takeover. Unauthorized data access. Theft of API keys.
